Job Description

The University of St. Thomas is a private, Catholic university known for its commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and fostering a welcoming environment that champions diversity and inclusion. Situated in St. Paul, Minnesota, the University prides itself on its mission to educate students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely, and work skillfully to advance the common good. With a strong foundation in Catholic intellectual tradition, the University combines rigorous academic programs with an inclusive community culture to prepare students for successful, impactful careers and lives. As a respected institution, the University of St. Thomas offers competitive employment opportunities with comprehensive benefits designed to support both personal and professional growth.

Within the University's Dining Services Department, the role of Sous Chef is a full-time, 12-month position that plays a vital part in the daily food operations on the St. Paul campus. Unlike many dining services roles that are outsourced to food service companies, this position works directly for the University itself, providing employees with more stability and institutional support. Offering an hourly wage of $23 to $25, this role operates during a consistent shift from 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM, Sunday through Thursday, though the exact schedule may adjust according to business needs.

The Sous Chef acts as a key member of the culinary management team, responsible for directly supporting the Production Chef in meal preparation within the main kitchen. This includes active participation in the high-volume, fast-paced environment of university dining halls, where the Sous Chef oversees and manages culinary staff and student workers. The role requires strong leadership skills to delegate preparation duties effectively and maintain kitchen operations to the highest standards. Training and supervision are critical components, with the Sous Chef ensuring that all team members properly follow recipes, maintain excellent food presentation, and adhere strictly to ServSafe food handling and safety guidelines. Excellence in food safety and sanitation is paramount to meet the University's commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable dining experience for students, staff, and faculty.

This position's responsibilities also extend beyond food production to ensuring that the kitchen team operates efficiently and meets the University’s quality standards. The Sous Chef’s contribution helps create an environment where staff can excel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, and accountability. The role is designated as Emergency Essential, meaning the employee may need to work during campus closures or unexpected situations to maintain dining services. This vital role supports the University's mission by contributing to the overall campus experience and nurturing a community-oriented atmosphere where all individuals feel valued.

The University of St. Thomas values diversity and equal opportunity in its workforce. It is committed to creating an inclusive environment where employees from all backgrounds are welcomed and respected. The University offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package, which includes tuition remission for employees, spouses, and dependents, generous retirement contributions, comprehensive health coverage comprising medical, dental, and vision plans, and fully paid insurance covering disability, life, and accidental death and dismemberment. Additionally, paid parental leave is provided to support families, making this a well-rounded employment opportunity for those seeking a meaningful career in culinary arts within a vibrant university community.
