We are currently seeking a Sous Chef to join our culinary team at Stevenson School, a prestigious college-preparatory day and boarding school serving approximately 530 students in grades 9-12. As a key leadership role reporting directly to the Executive Chef, the Sous Chef will play an integral part in supporting all culinary operations. This position offers an annual salary range of $70,500 to $76,500 and represents a unique opportunity for a motivated culinary professional passionate about scratch cooking, creativity, and delivering excellence in both food quality and presentation.

The Sous Chef will assist with daily food production and oversee kitchen operations, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. Responsibilities include menu development, supporting catering events from planning through execution, managing inventory and food cost controls, and supervising hourly kitchen staff to foster a productive and collaborative environment. The role requires implementing food safety and sanitation measures in strict compliance with HACCP and allergy protocols while maintaining cleanliness and organization throughout kitchen areas. Additionally, the Sous Chef will work closely with the Executive Chef and corporate culinary team to introduce new culinary initiatives and programs that align with the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

This position is ideal for candidates with a strong background in culinary arts and kitchen management, preferably with experience in high-volume institutional or contract dining settings such as K-12 schools. A creative approach to scratch cooking, a deep understanding of seasonal ingredients and sustainable practices, and the ability to lead special catering events are highly valued. Job Requirements

  • Associate degree in culinary arts or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years of culinary or kitchen management experience in high-volume foodservice environments
  • Strong knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards including HACCP and allergy protocols
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and lead a diverse kitchen team
  • Effective communication and leadership skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant culinary software tools
  • Commitment to sustainable and scratch cooking practices
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings and occasional weekends

Job Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Culinary Arts or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of dynamic culinary or kitchen management experience in high-volume foodservice operations
  • K-12 institutional or contract dining preferred
  • Strong catering experience and ability to lead special events
  • Knowledge of scratch cooking batch production and food cost controls
  • Confirmed understanding of food trends seasonal ingredients and sustainable practices
  • ServSafe Certification highly preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word Excel PowerPoint Outlook and internet-based tools
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a strong sense of ownership and collaboration
  • Dedication to customer happiness and a passion for crafting delicious nutritious meals for students and school communities

Job Duties

  • Assist the Executive Chef in daily kitchen operations including food preparation production and supervision of back-of-house staff
  • Support cost control initiatives by assisting with inventory management ordering and minimizing food waste
  • Help plan develop and implement menus that align with company culinary standards student preferences and nutritional guidelines
  • Lead or support the preparation and execution of catered events ensuring high-quality food presentation and service
  • Implement and support new culinary programs and initiatives in collaboration with the Executive Chef and corporate culinary team
  • Ensure all food safety and sanitation guidelines are rigorously followed including compliance with HACCP and allergy protocols
  • Maintain high standards for food quality cleanliness and organization in all kitchen areas
  • Participate in training and mentoring hourly culinary staff to support skill development and team culture
  • Champion a safe inclusive and collaborative kitchen environment that reflects the values of the school community and company
