The role of Sous Chef at Melody Living is integral to the success of the community’s dining experience. Reporting to the Executive Chef/Dining Services Director, the Sous Chef will play a vital leadership role in managing kitchen operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, nutritious, and appealing meals tailored to the dietary needs of the residents. This position demands a passionate culinary professional who possesses strong leadership and hospitality skills, as well as the ability to maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment that strictly adheres to food safety regulations and standards. The Sous Chef will assist in overseeing the hiring, training, and scheduling of the dining services team, helping to cultivate a positive work culture that motivates staff and enhances performance.

Key responsibilities include menu planning in collaboration with the Dining Services Director, managing inventory and supply orders, and coordinating with other departments to ensure a seamless dining experience for all residents. This role also involves supporting special events by working alongside directors from various departments such as Life Enrichment and Sales & Marketing to plan themed dining events, weddings, holidays, and more. The Sous Chef will be responsible for managing kitchen equipment maintenance and ensuring all kitchen activities comply with applicable food service licensure and safety laws.

Melody Living offers a full-time position for this role with competitive pay ranging from $52,000 to $55,000 annually. The work schedule involves 8-hour shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays to support the dynamic needs of the community. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of culinary management experience and strong knowledge of food safety standards, including certification such as ServSafe. Background checks through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and Department of Human Services are required as part of the hiring process.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • Participates in interviewing and hiring, and oversees the training, supervision, and scheduling of Dining Services Department Team Members
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, adhering to food safety standards
  • Ensures that nutritious and appealing meals are prepared on time and in sufficient quantity to satisfy the dietary needs of the community residents
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless service
  • Prepares and periodically updates menus in coordination with the Director of Dining Services, to conform with the dietary needs and restrictions of the community’s residents
  • Supports and assists the Director of Dining Services, Directors of Life Enrichment, and Director of Sales & Marketing in planning food and beverage components of themed evenings, dinners, picnics, and other special events
  • Ensures compliance with food service licensure and safe food-handling provisions of applicable law
  • Manage inventory and ordering of supplies, ensuring that all ingredients are fresh and available
  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude, providing exceptional hospitality to our residents
  • Develop and maintain a strong team culture, promoting a positive and supportive work environment
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with the latest culinary trends and techniques
  • Manage the kitchen during special events, such as weddings and holidays
  • Oversee the maintenance of kitchen equipment and ensure that all equipment is in good working order
