The Birmingham Barons, based at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama, operate under the management of Oak View Group. The role of Sous Chef at Birmingham Barons is a full-time, regular position offering an annual salary range between $51,000 and $53,000. Reporting directly to the Executive Chef, the Sous Chef assists in managing daily kitchen operations which include overseeing food preparation, banquet and buffet execution, staff supervision, scheduling, sanitation, and inventory management. This role is crucial in ensuring that the kitchen maintains high standards for food quality, presentation, safety, and cleanliness continually.
The Sous Chef works closely with kitchen staff to maintain recipe compliance, portion control, and production flow while fostering an environment of teamwork and positive morale. Key responsibilities involve supervising line set-up, food prep, and breakdown, as well as managing buffet, beverage, break, and carving station operations. The Sous Chef also takes part in administrative and record-keeping duties such as food inventory, ordering supplies, and organizing employee schedules to guarantee full kitchen coverage.

Job Requirements
- 3-5+ years of relevant culinary experience
- Supervisory experience in a banquet, hotel, or convention center kitchen
- Current state-issued Health Certificate
- Up-to-date immunizations
- ServSafe certification
- Strong leadership and communication skills

Job Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of experience in a similar role within an upscale banquet, hotel, or convention center environment
- Prior supervisory experience
- Current state-issued Health Certificate and required immunizations
- ServSafe certification
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and hands-on experience with food preparation methods and kitchen operations
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal communication, active listening, and customer service skills
- Proven experience training, mentoring, motivating, and evaluating staff
- Effective delegation skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Highly organized and able to prioritize tasks

Job Duties
- Supervises all line set-up, prep, and breakdown activities
- Responsible for in-service delegation of tasks to line personnel
- Supervises all buffet, beverage, break, and carving table set-up and breakdown
- Responsible for the setup of all necessary equipment including chafing dishes, sternos, china, serving ware, silverware, bowls and platters, heating lamps, and cutting boards
- Assists Executive Chef with kitchen record-keeping and administrative requirements, including food inventories and ordering
- Organizes employee work schedules ensuring appropriate coverage
- Measures, mixes, and cooks ingredients according to recipes
- Maintains a clean kitchen ensuring no food debris on floors, walls, equipment, and surfaces
- Provides ongoing training, mentoring, and assistance to kitchen staff to promote a positive and cooperative workplace environment
- Monitors food production to ensure quality, consistency, portion control, and recipe compliance
- Ensures all food safety standards are followed
- Communicates effectively with supervisors, peers, and subordinates
- Makes decisions and solves problems
- Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work
- Documents personnel discipline and works with Human Resources on personnel issues
- Performs other duties as assigned by Executive Chef
