The role of Sous Chef II at Sunrise Senior Living plays a pivotal part in upholding the company’s food service standards, focusing on culinary excellence and a great dining experience for residents. This position is responsible for overseeing the preparation and presentation of meals that meet the company’s exacting standards for taste quality, visual appeal, and nutritional value, ensuring resident satisfaction at every meal.
Working closely with the Executive Chef III, the Sous Chef II manages daily kitchen operations, supervises kitchen staff, and controls food production to maintain consistent quality and effective cost management. Engagement with residents during meal service is a critical aspect of the role, allowing for direct feedback that enhances dining experiences through tailored service and personal interaction. Beyond day-to-day kitchen supervision, the role extends to supporting special community events that involve food service, managing inventory, adhering to food safety regulations such as HACCP, and maintaining compliance with state and provincial laws.
The Sous Chef II also champions a team-oriented culture by mentoring kitchen colleagues, fostering a commitment to culinary skill advancement, and playing an active role in the implementation of Sunrise’s educational and engagement programs. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum three years experience as a chef
- Current Food Services sanitation certificate
- ServeSafe certification
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other relevant software
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, and flexible hours
- Must comply with all health and safety regulations including use of PPE and HACCP standards
- Ability to engage positively with senior residents
- Must pass all required pre-employment screenings and health evaluations
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and development
Job Qualifications
- Certification and/or college degree in culinary arts preferred
- Minimum three years experience as a chef
- Maintains current food services sanitation certificate
- ServeSafe certified
- Proficient in computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to learn new applications
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings
- Knowledge of state/provincial regulations affecting food service and safety
- Experience in supervising kitchen staff and managing kitchen operations
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills
Job Duties
- Lead daily food production and preparation and ensure that all meals meet Sunrise’s quality standards
- Responsible for food presentation ensuring each dish is high in quality and visually appealing with creativity and proper plating
- Maintain portion control and utilize techniques to ensure consistency and cost-effectiveness without compromising quality while managing budgeted per resident day
- Engage actively with residents during mealtime to gauge satisfaction, address concerns, and enhance dining experiences with table touches
- Provide leadership and fill in for Executive Chef III when absent, ensuring high standards of hygiene, sanitation, and presentation
- Support Executive Chef III managing kitchen operations including staff oversight, inventory management, and ordering supplies
- Collaborate with dining team to organize special events, banquets, and community activities involving food service
- Support and adhere to product order guide and primary vendor program
- Champion community goals for food quality through monitoring and evaluation of cooking methods and service delivery
- Ensure HACCP standards are in place and food safety practices are followed
- Assist in oversight of Bistro and special events food production and presentation
