Concordia University is a reputable educational institution located in Seward, Nebraska, that values quality food service as an essential part of the campus experience. At its facility located at 800 North Colombia, the university offers a dynamic and supportive work environment where culinary professionals can thrive. The university partners with Compass Group, a recognized leader in food service management, to provide an engaging work culture focused on service excellence, teamwork, and professional growth. With ongoing opportunities for career advancement and an emphasis on continuous learning, Concordia University provides a meaningful employment experience within an academic setting.
We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced full-time Sous Chef to join our campus dining team. This vital role involves assisting the Executive Chef in the preparation and cooking of foods, ensuring that all culinary operations run smoothly and efficiently in a high-volume kitchen setting. The Sous Chef will directly oversee kitchen activities and coordinate food service associates, stepping into the Executive Chef's responsibilities during their absence. The position offers a full-time schedule with varying days and working hours primarily between 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm, providing a competitive pay range of $22.00 to $25.00 per hour.
The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment, maintaining the highest standards of food quality, safety, and sanitation. Responsibilities include cooking to approved recipes and production standards while ensuring timely meal preparation according to production orders. Supervisory duties extend to managing hourly food service associates, including interviewing, scheduling shifts, handling payroll, training, counseling, conducting performance reviews, and recommending disciplinary actions when necessary. The Sous Chef is also responsible for inventory control, monitoring the delivery and storage of supplies, and ensuring compliance with corporate, state, and federal food safety regulations.
This position not only requires culinary expertise but also interpersonal skills, as it involves direct interaction with customers to address concerns professionally and courteously. The candidate must ensure proper food presentation, portion control, and maintenance of serving temperatures, providing an exceptional dining experience at Concordia University. Additionally, maintaining sanitation of equipment and workspace cleanliness throughout service hours is critical to uphold health and safety standards.
Concordia University's campus kitchen benefits from a comprehensive set of employee perks provided through Compass Group, including opportunities for training and development that foster career growth. The position offers robust benefits such as health and wellness programs, a retirement plan, associate shopping programs, and voluntary insurance benefits. Full-time associates enjoy additional medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, commuter benefits, employee assistance programs, and flexible spending accounts. Paid and unpaid time off benefits are also available, subject to local laws and company policies.
Applicants will find a supportive and inclusive workplace committed to diversity and equal opportunity, welcoming candidates regardless of their background and ensuring accommodations as needed. Work schedules may fluctuate depending on academic breaks, with potential temporary layoffs during periods of reduced food service demand. However, staff may have opportunities to work year-round or at alternate locations as needed. We encourage qualified culinary professionals passionate about serving an academic community to apply and be part of an organization that values dedication, professionalism, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in campus dining.
