The position of Sous Chef is a full-time role based in Raleigh, North Carolina, at Saint Mary's School, located at 900 Hillsborough Street. This role offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $20.00 to $21.00 per hour with standard working hours from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends as needed. This role reports directly to the Executive Chef and is integral to ensuring the smooth operation and culinary excellence of the kitchen. The Sous Chef supports the Executive Chef in preparing and cooking food according to established recipes and production standards. They are responsible for supervising kitchen and foodservice associates, managing inventory, ordering supplies, maintaining sanitation standards, and ensuring compliance with all safety and food handling protocols.
The ideal candidate for this position will have prior supervisory experience, especially in leading teams, inventory management, and ordering of food and supplies. The Sous Chef role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a passion for food quality and safety. The role also involves direct interaction with customers, resolving complaints professionally and fostering a service-oriented atmosphere. Job Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
- Prior supervisory, lead, inventory, and ordering experience preferred
- Ability to work full-time hours Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
- Willingness to work weekends as needed
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform kitchen duties
- Must comply with all food safety and sanitation regulations
- Ability to interact professionally with customers and resolve complaints
- Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
Job Qualifications
- Prior supervisory or lead experience in a kitchen or food-service setting
- Experience with inventory management and ordering
- Ability to follow approved recipes and maintain production standards
- Strong leadership and team coordination skills
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation procedures
- Customer service skills and ability to interact positively with customers
- Ability to manage scheduling, payroll, and training of staff
Job Duties
- Help Executive Chef prepare and cook foods
- Coordinate activities of cooks and other food-service associates
- Assume responsibility for kitchen and food-service associates in absence of Executive Chef
- Cook and prepare food following approved recipes and production standards
- Ensure all deadlines are met based on production orders
- Supervise hourly food service associates including interviewing, scheduling, payroll, training, counseling, participating in reviews and recommending disciplinary action
- Store food in designated areas following all corporate, state and federal food safety and sanitation procedures
- Ensure proper food handling, presentation, portion control and maintenance of appropriate serving temperatures
- Maintain sanitation of equipment, supplies and utensils
- Clean workstation thoroughly before leaving area
- Keep display equipment clean and free of debris during meal service
- Interact with customers to resolve complaints in a friendly, service-oriented manner
- Relay relevant information directly to supervisor
- Demonstrate complete understanding of daily menu items and accurately explain them to associates and customers
- Monitor inventory and deliveries of product and supplies
- Track product production, consumption and waste
- Inform supervisor when supplies or product are low
- Perform other duties as assigned
