The role being offered is a Sous Chef position located at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, IN. This role involves significant responsibilities in food preparation planning and direction, as well as staff supervision and administrative duties. As a Sous Chef, the successful candidate will be critical to ensuring all food production meets timing and quality standards, with duties including supervising kitchen staff, training team members, understanding and following function menus, preparing production schedules, and efficiently managing kitchen operations. The Sous Chef plays a vital part in maintaining smooth kitchen workflow by utilizing batch cooking techniques to balance production needs and prevent waste.

The role requires flexibility, as opening and closing the kitchen may be part of the work shift responsibilities. The position is ideal for a culinary professional who has at least one to three years of cooking experience, coupled with some supervisory experience. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, while a Culinary Arts degree is preferred. Job Duties

  • Time food production such that all food is ready at the time of service
  • supervise and train staff
  • read and understand Function Sheets for menus and time of functions
  • produce and maintain prep sheets and duty rosters
  • utilize batch cooking techniques to avoid over or under production
  • properly open and/or close the kitchen if required by work shift
