Job Description
The Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS), founded in 1846, is recognized as one of the nation’s premier historical institutions. Operating as both a State of Wisconsin government agency and a mission-driven entrepreneurial organization, WHS uniquely combines public service with innovative and engaging programs that connect people to their history. The society is among the largest and most diversified state historical societies nationwide, dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing stories that enrich the public’s understanding of the past. This comprehensive approach includes various resources such as a library, archives, museum collections, historic sites, a historic preservation office, and extensive educational outreach programs. All are designed to fulfill WHS’s vision to enrich and transform lives by providing unparalleled access to history.
WHS is also deeply committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. This commitment reflects the belief that diversity enhances the quality of its workforce and is essential for supporting its mission. By embracing these values, WHS aims to attract, engage, and retain talented individuals who share a passion for history and public service.
The position of Sous Chef at WHS’s Old World Wisconsin is a vital role that supports the organization’s mission by managing the daily culinary operations at The Clausing Cafe and The Creamery. This role also involves assisting with private events, banquets, and onsite catering functions. The Sous Chef position plays a crucial part in enhancing the guest experience by combining historical food traditions with contemporary dining offerings. Food at Old World Wisconsin serves as a cultural and emotional gateway, and the Sous Chef helps deliver this unique experience by preparing dishes inspired by historic recipes alongside popular everyday fare.
Reporting directly to the Food and Beverage Manager, the Sous Chef is responsible for overseeing food preparation, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation in all food and beverage areas, and guiding the food service staff in operational best practices. This role requires maintaining essential certifications, including a Local (Town of Eagle) beverage server’s license and a Serv-Safe WI Food Handlers license, both crucial for compliance and guest safety.
This part-time position averages 30 hours per week with a pay rate of $19.00 per hour plus a weekend differential of $0.80. Given the limited term nature of this employment, it does not include paid time off or additional benefits upon hire. The job demands flexibility to work various shifts that may include days, evenings, weekends, and special events, and entails working both indoors and outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions. Physical requirements include the ability to safely lift and maneuver trays of food.
The Sous Chef will actively contribute to a welcoming and respectful environment for staff, guests, and peers, all aligned with the inclusive values of WHS. This outpost creates a unique blend of culinary artistry with historic reverence, making the Sous Chef role not only a job but a meaningful position to help preserve and promote Wisconsin’s historic and cultural heritage through food.
