The role of the Sous Chef at Riverdale Country School is a full-time, exempt position that plays a pivotal role in leading the culinary team. Reporting directly to the Assistant Culinary Director and Culinary Director, the Sous Chef will oversee the preparation and cooking of all food items for daily food service as well as special events. This position requires a hands-on leader who can manage a high-volume kitchen, ensuring the quality, safety, and timely delivery of meals that meet the school's standards.

Ideal candidates will have substantial experience in large volume cooking and team management within food service environments. They will be instrumental in promoting farm-to-table food initiatives, contributing strategically to the organization and structure of the culinary program, and fostering a collaborative team culture. The Sous Chef must be adept at communicating clearly and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders including students, parents, colleagues, management, and vendors.

Attention to compliance with health and safety regulations, food quality control, and inventory management is critical in this position. The successful candidate will help maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment while also ensuring adherence to all food service policies and standards. They will play an essential role in training and mentoring culinary staff, creating work plans, and liaising with management to maintain the school's high level of food service excellence.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management or equivalent experience preferred
  • Minimum of 2-4 years progressive culinary management experience
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills
  • Ability to train others
  • NYC Food Handlers certification
  • ServSafe certification
  • Allertrain certification
  • Ability to lift, move, and/or transport up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to work in a loud and busy kitchen environment
  • Availability to work Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm with some evenings and weekends required

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years large volume cooking experience
  • Two years experience managing a team in a food service environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service
  • Ability to lead and support kitchen staff
  • Holds valid NYC DOH Food Protection Certificate
  • Knowledge of food preparation and production for volume restaurant and banquet facility
  • Knowledge of various cuisines and cultural foods focusing on sustainable sourcing
  • Ability to evaluate food quality by tasting
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Experience with food safety standards and procedures

Job Duties
