Job Description

Mon Ami Gabi is a renowned French bistro located inside the historic Beldon-Stratford building in Chicago's vibrant Lincoln Park neighborhood. Mon Ami Gabi Chicago is currently seeking an experienced and motivated Sous Chef to join their dynamic kitchen team. This role is integral to maintaining the high standards of food quality, presentation, and guest satisfaction that the restaurant is known for. The Sous Chef will work closely with the General Manager and other management staff to ensure smooth back-of-house (BOH) operations while fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. With a competitive salary ranging from $55,000 to $75,000 per year, this position offers a rewarding career opportunity with room for growth.

The Sous Chef will be responsible for running BOH shifts efficiently, ensuring all food preparation and cooking meet the restaurant's standards. Leadership duties include overseeing the kitchen, dish, and other BOH teams and conducting pre-shift meetings to align the team on daily goals and quality checks. The role also involves active participation in inventory control, purchasing, and cost management to maintain operational efficiency. This position requires excellent communication skills, as the Sous Chef will act as a liaison between front-of-house and back-of-house teams to coordinate food production and service timing. Job Requirements

  • 2 years of sous chef experience
  • Previous experience working in a full-service restaurant
  • Ability to lead and manage kitchen staff effectively
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Capability to work varying shifts including early mornings, late nights and weekends
  • Ability to move and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Willingness to travel overnight if required

Job Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of sous chef experience in a full-service restaurant
  • Ability to lead and manage the kitchen staff
  • Experience with French cuisine is a plus

Job Duties

  • Run BOH shifts and ensure effective and efficient BOH shifts and operations including food prep and cooking, ensure adequate inventory levels of food and supplies, and supervise the kitchen, dish and all other BOH teams
  • Lead BOH pre-shift meetings and participating in line, temp and cooler checks and food tastings for the shift
  • Partner with GM and/or designated managers/chefs to regularly review and maintain recipe books
  • Perform regular line checks throughout the day to ensure quality of all menu items
  • Purchase and order food product and supplies for the restaurant including daily product order
  • Assist with tracking and controlling food cost
  • Ensure effective communication of food production and timing issues, needs, and special requests between front of house (FOH) and BOH
  • Partner with GM and management team to interview, hire, onboard, train, supervise and develop all BOH employees and teams as needed
  • Model and promote teamwork across all teams
  • Use tact and good judgment when dealing with challenges pertaining to guests, vendors and employees, and respond with patience and courtesy
  • Work a variety of days and shifts (including early mornings, late nights and weekends) at multiple sites with or without overnight travel, as needed
  • Move and lift up to 10 pounds, frequently move and/or lift up to 25 pounds, occasionally move and/or lift up to 50 pounds
