The role of Sous Chef at Andaz Napa is a critical leadership position within the culinary department of the hotel. This position involves managing a specific culinary section and partnering closely with the Executive Chef to maintain and elevate quality standards across all kitchen operations. The Sous Chef will have significant responsibility, particularly in the absence of the Executive Chef, where they are expected to oversee the entire kitchen operation. This role is perfect for a culinary professional who not only has a passion for excellent food but also possesses strong leadership capabilities and a desire to nurture teamwork and exceptional guest service.

Key responsibilities of the Sous Chef include supporting senior leadership with management duties, acting as the liaison between culinary and other departments in the hotel, supervising food preparation and cooking, and developing innovative menu items aligned with Hyatt brand standards. The Sous Chef will also coordinate and manage special events and holiday functions, oversee scheduling, payroll, training, coaching, evaluating, and hiring of hourly kitchen staff. Additional leadership responsibilities may include managing other culinary supervisors and less senior Sous Chefs. The successful candidate will focus on maintaining high standards for food production, controlling costs, ensuring quality and consistency, and upholding safety and sanitation protocols throughout the kitchen environment. This position offers an hourly wage of $29.00 and provides an opportunity to be part of a team that values creativity, leadership, and operational excellence in a prestigious hotel setting.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in a professional kitchen environment
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced setting
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Flexibility to work various shifts including weekends and holidays
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods and perform kitchen duties
  • Willingness to comply with all health and safety regulations

Job Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a sous chef or similar role
  • Culinary degree or relevant certification preferred
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Ability to develop creative menus
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation regulations
  • Experience in managing kitchen staff and operations

Job Duties

  • Support senior leadership by developing and assuming basic management responsibilities
  • Assume the role of liaison between all departments within the culinary division and all other hotel departments
  • Supervise the preparation and cooking of various food items
  • Develop and implement creative menu items that adhere to Hyatt brand standards
  • Plan, coordinate and implement special events and holiday functions
  • Manage hourly kitchen employees through scheduling, payroll, training, coaching, evaluating and hiring
  • May manage other key culinary leadership roles including supervisor and other less senior Sous Chefs
  • Lead and coach the team towards achieving exceptional guest service and employee satisfaction results
  • Monitor food production, ordering, cost, and quality and consistency on a daily basis
  • Ensure proper safety and sanitation of all kitchen facilities and equipment
