Job Description
Independence Village Grand Ledge is part of a respected network of senior living communities under the CommonSail Investment Group, with over 37 years of experience serving seniors and their families across multiple states including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, and Tennessee. These communities offer a variety of services tailored to meet the unique needs of their residents, including independent living, enhanced living, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing. The organization prides itself on creating a caring and inclusive culture that supports both residents and employees, fostering an environment where genuine connections and exceptional service are prioritized. Independence Village Grand Ledge, like its sister locations, is committed to delivering the absolute best experiences to seniors, their families, and the wider community, in every moment and interaction.
The role of Sous Chef at Independence Village Grand Ledge is a pivotal culinary position that involves supporting the Executive Chef in overseeing all food service operations within the dining department. The Sous Chef plays an integral role in managing the kitchen staff, ensuring high standards of food quality, presentation, and safety, and contributing to menu planning and inventory management. This is a leadership role that requires excellent organizational skills, time management, and the ability to foster a positive, professional kitchen environment.
As Sous Chef, you will assist in hiring, coaching, and managing culinary staff, ensuring consistent adherence to quality controls such as portion sizes and cost management. A key responsibility is to maintain the highest food standards by tasting dishes and overseeing plate presentation to maintain a 100% resident satisfaction goal. The Sous Chef also steps up to lead the culinary department in the absence of the Executive Chef, making it essential to have strong leadership abilities and the versatility to cover emergency situations and busy periods.
The position demands fine dining experience and a demonstrable ability to work towards Sous Chef Certification or similar credentials. Candidates must have proven leadership experience with strong skills in people management and kitchen operations. The role is not just about cooking but about creating exceptional dining experiences that support the organization’s mission and values toward seniors’ well-being.
The company culture embraces the philosophy of making every minute great, anchored by six core pillars: Dream Big, Have Courage, Take Initiative, Be Accountable, Give Back, and Enjoy it. Employees are empowered to lead, collaborate, and cultivate innovation within their teams. This philosophy has driven sustained growth and a reputation for excellence within the senior living industry.
At Independence Village Grand Ledge, the Sous Chef will be part of a close-knit team that values creativity, teamwork, and service excellence. Candidates who thrive here are those who are passionate about serving others, eager to contribute their skills, and motivated to grow within a supportive and dynamic community. This role offers an excellent opportunity to advance a culinary career while making a meaningful impact on the lives of seniors and their families.
