The Sous Chef position at Giant Eagle plays a critical role within the culinary operations of the company, serving as a key leader in the kitchen and ensuring the seamless execution of food preparation, safety, and service standards. This role involves assisting with the ordering of materials and supplies, menu planning, inventory management, and the implementation of sanitation, cost control, and quality programs. The Sous Chef is responsible for directing and coordinating the work of kitchen team members, providing strong leadership in the absence of the Executive Chef, Kitchen Manager, or Prepared Foods Team Leader, depending on the location. This position offers the opportunity to demonstrate culinary expertise and innovation by contributing ideas that stimulate business growth while maximizing customer satisfaction and profitability.

Ideal candidates will have 1 to 3 years of experience in food preparation and culinary management, coupled with a solid understanding of food safety standards including ServSafe certification, which is considered a plus. Prior management experience in the culinary field and excellent food preparation skills are highly valued. The Sous Chef must also be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and be at least 18 years of age. They should exhibit outstanding customer service skills, a commitment to teamwork, and the ability to maintain high standards of sanitation and food quality.

In this role, the Sous Chef will actively support a culture of safety for team members and customers, promote suggestive selling techniques, and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and company health regulations. The position demands vigilance in inspecting food quality, maintaining departmental records using HACCP charts and temperature checks, and controlling costs through waste management and inventory monitoring. The Sous Chef will also engage with financial reviews and equipment inspections to ensure operational efficiency and food safety.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • Actively support a culture of safety including food safety Team Member safety and customer safety
  • Actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques
  • Provide active sampling opportunities when appropriate

  • Inspect food and food preparation maintaining quality and sanitation regulations
  • Assign coordinate and evaluate work of kitchen Team Members by writing schedules preparation lists cooking times and feedback evaluations
  • Maintain accurate department records using HACCP charts cooling charts cooking temperature sheets holding temperature sheets refrigeration temperature charts and thermometer calibration charts
  • Control departmental costs by monitoring waste and keeping waste logs
  • Manage food and controllable inventories by taking weekly and monthly inventories and tracking inventory reports
  • Review financial transactions and monitor departmental budgets with the Kitchen Manager
  • Inspect equipment requirements to ensure safety and quality of food production
