The role of the Sous Chef at Giant Eagle is pivotal in maintaining high standards of food preparation and kitchen management. The Sous Chef will assist with ordering materials and supplies, menu planning, and inventory control while implementing sanitation, cost, and quality control programs. This role requires leadership skills to direct and coordinate the work of kitchen team members, ensuring that all food is prepared according to safety and quality guidelines. The Sous Chef is also expected to provide innovative ideas to foster business growth while exceeding customer expectations and maximizing company profits.

The Sous Chef will often lead the kitchen in the absence of the Executive Chef, Kitchen Manager, or Prepared Foods Team Leader, taking full responsibility for kitchen operations temporarily. This position demands dedication to food safety, cost control, and customer service excellence. The Sous Chef will provide training, direction, and mentorship to kitchen staff, helping to cultivate a professional and efficient work environment. This role also involves maintaining accurate records, monitoring budgets, managing food inventories, and ensuring that all equipment used meets company standards for food safety and presentation.

Candidates for this role should have between 1 to 3 years of culinary experience, with prior management experience and strong food preparation skills being highly desirable. Familiarity with food safety practices, including ServSafe certification (preferred but not mandatory), is important to ensure compliance with all health regulations. The position expects the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and requires at least 18 years of age. Travel requirements are minimal and regional, less than 10% of the time. Day-to-day responsibilities will include supporting a culture of safety, practicing suggestive selling, actively participating in diversity and inclusion, and maintaining the highest integrity in all customer interactions.

The hiring range for this position is $21.50 per hour/year, and compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, education, and location. Job Duties

  • Actively support a culture of safety which includes but is not limited to food safety, Team Member safety and customer safety
  • Actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques
  • Provide active sampling opportunities when appropriate
  • Conduct business with a clear understanding that customer service is a significant point of difference for the company
  • Actively participate in and promote an environment which embraces diversity, inclusion and respect for Team Members, Customers, Vendors, and the Community
  • Inspect food and food preparation by both physical and visual inspection to maintain quality and sanitation regulations
  • Assign, coordinate and evaluate work of kitchen Team Members by writing schedules, preparation list, listing cooking times as well as Team Member feedback evaluations
  • Maintain accurate department records using HACCP charts, cooling charts, cooking temperature sheets, holding temperatures sheets, refrigeration temperatures charts and thermometer calibration charts
  • Ensure documentation of activities to meet federal, state, county and company requirements
  • Control departmental costs by monitoring waste and keeping completed waste logs to increase profitability and adhere to budget
  • Manage food and controllable inventories by taking actual weekly and monthly inventories and tracking inventory reports
  • Review financial transactions and monitor budgets by keeping up to date purchase logs and labor estimates as well as reviewing projections and profit and loss statements
  • Inspect equipment requirements to ensure the company has needed equipment for food production presentation, transportation and safe handling
