Job Description

Giant Eagle is a prominent supermarket chain renowned for its dedication to quality, service, and value. Established to serve diverse communities with a focus on fresh and nutritious food, Giant Eagle has grown to become a trusted name in the grocery and food service industry. The company operates numerous store locations and is committed to fostering a welcoming environment not only for its customers but also for its Team Members. At Giant Eagle, the culture emphasizes compassion, care, and mutual respect, creating a workplace where employees can thrive, grow, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Giant Eagle is recognized for its innovation and continuous improvement in food quality and customer experience, making it a leader in both retail and prepared foods sectors.

The role of Sous Chef at Giant Eagle is crucial to ensuring the smooth operation and success of the kitchen. The Sous Chef plays a vital leadership position, assisting in materials ordering, menu planning, inventory management, and implementing sanitation, cost, and quality control programs. This position requires someone who can direct and coordinate the work of kitchen team members effectively while sustaining high standards in food preparation and customer service. A strong Sous Chef is expected to bring innovative ideas to stimulate business growth, exceeding customer expectations while maximizing company profits.

In scenarios where the Executive Chef, Kitchen Manager, or Prepared Foods Team Leader is unavailable, the Sous Chef steps up to lead the entire kitchen operation, demonstrating strong leadership and decision-making skills. The role includes training and managing kitchen staff, ensuring all food safety and operational guidelines are strictly followed, and maintaining inventory accuracy and cost control. The Sous Chef actively supports a safety-first culture encompassing food safety, team member safety, and customer safety. Demonstrating excellent food preparation skills and knowledge of food products is essential. Experience with suggestive selling techniques and customer service is highly valued, as is the ability to contribute to an inclusive environment that respects diversity among team members, customers, vendors, and the community.

This position requires attention to detail, adherence to federal, state, and company regulations, and the ability to maintain meticulous documentation including HACCP charts and temperature logs. The Sous Chef also plays a collaborative role, working closely with the Kitchen Manager to review budgets, monitor financial transactions, and help ensure profitability through waste control and inventory management. The ability to inspect kitchen equipment and oversee its maintenance to support efficient food production is part of the key responsibilities. Ideal candidates will have 1 to 3 years of relevant experience, preferably with prior culinary management and food safety knowledge, including Serv-safe certification. The physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds and some regional travel of less than 10% of the time. Giant Eagle values team members who are at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and demonstrate a passion for culinary excellence and customer-focused service.

By joining Giant Eagle as a Sous Chef, individuals become part of a supportive community where they can make a real impact, build a meaningful career, and grow their potential in a respected and growing company. The role offers a chance to lead in a dynamic kitchen environment dedicated to nourishing life’s important moments with high culinary standards and exceptional customer experience.
