Job Description

Recology is the largest employee-owned resource recovery company in the industry, known for its commitment to ecological innovation and sustainability. With a culture that values community, diversity, altruism, accountability, collaboration, and a hands-on learning approach, Recology stands out as a leader in waste management and resource recovery. The company is dedicated to the mission of reducing waste through the practice of the 4R's: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, and Recologize. This mission drives the company to return resources to their best and highest use, promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable community growth. Recology's emphasis on employee ownership fosters a supportive and motivated workforce, contributing to its success and innovation in the field.

The role of Sorter at Recology is a full-time position with a Monday through Friday schedule from 4 am to 12:30 pm. This role is fundamental to the company's operations, involving the sorting of a wide variety of reusable waste materials for recycling in accordance with established standards and procedures. Working under close supervision, the Sorter ensures that contaminated or non-recyclable materials are effectively separated from recyclable ones, maintaining compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and company policies. The position requires attention to detail as the employee identifies and distinguishes between various recyclable materials such as paper and glass and non-recyclables like general garbage. This may involve sorting materials on a conveyor belt and inspecting the contents of bags to ensure proper sorting.

The Sorter also plays a vital role in maintaining a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols and reporting any hazardous materials found within the waste stream. This proactive approach to safety helps prevent accidents and ensures a healthy workplace. Additionally, the employee is responsible for emptying and changing containers for sorted materials as needed, which supports the smooth operation of the recycling process. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the team and optimize resource recovery.

Recology offers a highly supportive and inclusive work environment that encourages professional growth and development. As part of the employee-owned structure, employees share in the company’s success and are rewarded with competitive benefits. These benefits include paid time off, paid holidays, comprehensive health and wellness options such as medical, dental, and vision coverage, retirement plans including an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and 401(k) with matching, annual wellness incentives, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Furthermore, employees have access to educational assistance, commuting benefits, and an employee referral program, all of which contribute to a balanced and rewarding employment experience.

The company's commitment to diversity and equal opportunity means that all qualified applicants receive fair consideration for employment regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. Recology also supports reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions. This inclusive approach ensures a workplace that values and respects all employees.

Working as a Sorter at Recology offers both an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability efforts and to be part of a mission-driven company that values care for community and planet. This role is ideal for entry-level candidates who are eager to learn, take initiative, and work in a dynamic and collaborative environment dedicated to a world without waste.
