Job Description

City Winery is a distinguished and innovative establishment that harmoniously blends the art of winemaking, live music, and sophisticated culinary experiences into one extraordinary venue. Founded in 2008 by music industry visionary Michael Dorf, City Winery has rapidly become a nationally acclaimed destination where wine, food, and entertainment intersect. This unique venue combines a fully operating winery with intimate concert settings, offering food and wine classes, private events, and fine dining experiences within an urban environment designed to replicate the wine country ambiance in the heart of the city. With a clientele consisting of passionate foodies and culturally engaged patrons, City Winery is dedicated to delivering an unparalleled experience that seamlessly integrates exquisite wines, world-class music performances, and exceptional cuisine.

As a hub for creativity and community, City Winery prioritizes hospitality as a foundational philosophy, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests and staff alike. Renowned for its award-winning locally produced wines that consistently earn ratings of 90+ points, the venue offers a diverse calendar of events that cater to the sophisticated tastes of its audience. Beyond entertainment, City Winery fosters inclusivity, creativity, and professional excellence, aiming to elevate the cultural landscape through thoughtful service and dynamic experiences.

The Sommelier role at City Winery is a critical position that supports the venue’s commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences with a focus on wine and beverage excellence. This role requires a knowledgeable and passionate wine professional who is adept at enhancing beverage sales while educating and engaging guests. The Sommelier acts as the in-house expert on wine, beer, and spirits, with responsibilities that include recommending pairings, assisting with beverage inventory, and maintaining a well-organized wine cellar. While formal certification is not mandatory, a deep familiarity with global wine regions, producers, and vintages is essential. The successful candidate will possess a sincere desire to advance the wine program through clear communication, curiosity, and mentorship. They must be adept at providing thoughtful, expert guidance in a hospitable manner that elevates the guest’s experience.

The role demands at least two years of sommelier experience within fast-paced restaurant environments and an authentic enthusiasm for all aspects of winemaking and beverage expertise. The professional must deliver consistently high-quality guest interaction, exceeding expectations by crafting memorable visits to City Winery. Key personal traits include a strong work ethic, teamwork orientation, attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, polished presentation, and effective communication. The Sommelier must be capable of resolving issues tactfully and maintaining composure under pressure. Fluency in English, proficient use of POS systems, and the physical endurance for dynamic hospitality work are also required. This position offers the opportunity to be part of a nationally recognized brand that melds the joys of wine, music, and food in an exciting urban setting.

By joining City Winery, the Sommelier becomes an integral part of a passionate team dedicated to redefining the live music and hospitality scene. This role provides expansive opportunities for personal growth while participating in a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates culture, community, and craftsmanship. With flexible scheduling that includes nights, weekends, and holidays, this position supports a dynamic work-life balance.
