The Sommelier role at The Detroit Athletic Club is a unique opportunity for a wine professional who is passionate about delivering an exceptional and personalized wine experience to the club's discerning members. This position focuses on elevating the wine service across all the club’s dining venues while maintaining an impeccably organized and well-managed cellar. Reporting to the Assistant Wine Director, the Sommelier plays a vital role in supporting the club's comprehensive wine program. This includes direct member engagement where the Sommelier provides expert guidance on wine selections, pairing recommendations, and service presentation. The role also demands meticulous attention to cellar operations such as inventory control, storage conditions, and stock rotation to ensure optimal wine quality and availability.

In addition to daily member service, the Sommelier contributes to club events including private functions, wine dinners, and tastings. The role entails collaboration with the broader food and beverage team to execute these events flawlessly, ensuring all aspects of the wine program align with the club’s high standards. Further, the Sommelier acts as a key resource and trainer for service teams, sharing wine knowledge and best practices to promote a cohesive and knowledgeable service environment. This position requires a blend of polished floor presence, operational discipline, and enthusiasm for wine education.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in wine regions, varietals, and styles, coupled with strong organizational skills in cellar management. Physical stamina to manage cellar tasks and flexibility to work varied schedules including weekends and holidays are essential. Job Requirements

  • Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, stand, sit, and use stairs
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to perform with varying temperatures of indoor and outdoor environments
  • Must be able to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Moderate/excessive noise level in the work environment
  • Location of work/office/space may be changed as needed or required
  • Must be able to work a varied schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed

Job Qualifications

  • Sommelier certification (CMS Intro/Certified) or WSET Level 2+ preferred
  • 2-5 years of wine-focused experience in fine dining, luxury hospitality, or private club environments
  • Strong foundational knowledge of classic wine regions, varietals, and styles
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail in cellar management
  • Excellent communication skills and a passion for guest interaction
  • Ability to lift and move wine cases and work in cellar environments

Job Duties

  • Provide polished, personalized wine service across all dining venues
  • Guide members through wine selections with thoughtful pairing recommendations
  • Present, open, decant, and serve wines according to elevated service standards
  • Build relationships with members to understand preferences and enhance their dining experience
  • Support wine service for club events, private functions, and wine dinners
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and logical bin placement within the main cellar and satellite storage areas
  • Receive and inspect all wine deliveries for accuracy and condition
  • Label, catalog, and properly store wines according to established cellar systems
  • Assist with monthly inventories to ensure accuracy and accountability
  • Monitor cellar temperature, humidity, and storage conditions to protect wine quality
  • Support stock rotation and communicate low inventory or reordering needs to the Wine Director
  • Assist with implementation of new wine list additions and vintage changes
  • Ensure POS systems, wine lists, and bin numbers remain accurate and current
  • Prepare wines, glassware, and materials for tastings, dinners, and Wine Society events
  • Support by-the-glass program management including Coravin offerings where applicable
  • Participate in and help conduct pre-shift wine trainings across all outlets
  • Act as a resource for servers regarding wine knowledge and pairing suggestions
  • Model professional wine service standards and hospitality excellence
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discretion, and member service
  • Maintain all wine tools, service stations, and storage areas in pristine condition
  • Adhere to all club policies and service protocols
