The Sommelier position at Jose Andres Group plays a vital role in supporting and enhancing the restaurant’s wine program. This role works in close partnership with JAG and Property Beverage Department leads to deliver an exceptional wine experience to guests. The Sommelier will assist in wine service, supervise wine purchasing and storing, and contribute to menu development and improving steps of service. The role is designed for a professional who is passionate about wines and dedicated to elevating the guest experience through expert beverage knowledge and top-tier service skills. The Sommelier will be an integral team player, collaborating with beverage leads, general managers, chefs, and local vendors to ensure optimum wine quality and availability, and to drive wine sales.

The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of Spanish wines and regions, understanding appropriate table settings, wine storage methods, and service protocols. This position demands a person who can teach and inspire the service team through continuous education, training, and demonstration of best practices. In addition, the Sommelier is expected to be well-versed in current wine products, market trends, and the operational software used within the organization, such as Excel, Micros, and Compeat, in order to maintain accurate wine control processes.

This role is highly guest-focused, requiring excellent communication skills in English and the ability to provide attentive, knowledgeable, and courteous service under pressure. The Sommelier will regularly participate in beverage manager meetings, work on organizing wine-related events, and assist in maintaining wine and glassware inventory. Physical stamina is also a necessity, as the position requires standing and walking for long periods and occasionally lifting trays of wine or food items.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 8 hours
  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs regularly
  • Ability to occasionally lift trays weighing up to 30 lbs
  • Experience in wine service and beverage sales
  • Familiarity with wine control software such as Excel, Micros or Compeat
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Knowledge of wine storage and proper handling methods
  • Willingness to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

Job Qualifications

  • Wine certification from a recognized organization a plus
  • Knowledge of Spanish wines and regions
  • Ability to speak clearly, read, write and understand English
  • Knowledge of appropriate table settings and service ware
  • Thorough knowledge of menu items and service procedures

Job Duties

  • Actively perform wine service focusing on guest experience and sales
  • Take beverage orders and serve wine, beer, cocktails and other drinks according to JAG standards
  • Observe dining and serving areas to ensure cleanliness, proper setup and service
  • Ensure proper wine storing methods and conditions
  • Partner with beverage leads, general manager and head chef to develop and improve wine training program
  • Demonstrate technique and proper execution of wine service and storage
  • Conduct research on new products and opportunities
  • Maintain communication with local vendors and distributors to ensure wine supplies
  • Become familiar with wine control processes and software
  • Assist in organizing wine-related events and festivals
  • Ensure proper utilization of wine control methods at the restaurant level
  • Attend monthly beverage manager meetings
  • Assist in creation and maintenance of opening, closing and running side work and stock requisition
