Job Description

The Modern is a renowned Michelin-starred contemporary American restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art. Known for its exquisite culinary craftsmanship, The Modern offers diners an exceptional experience through its innovative and refined dishes that emphasize the finest ingredients and seasonality. The restaurant presents two distinct dining experiences: a bold tasting or prix fixe menu in the elegant dining room and a dynamic à la carte menu in the lively Bar Room. Celebrated for culinary excellence, The Modern holds two Michelin stars, a prestigious Three Star review from the New York Times, four James Beard Awards, and the Grand Award from Wine Spectator, securing its position as a leading destination for food and wine enthusiasts. The Modern is proudly operated by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, an organization celebrated for its commitment to hospitality and cultivating exceptional team cultures.

As a Sommelier at The Modern, you will become a vital member of the restaurant's Service team, dedicated to delivering an unforgettable wine experience that complements The Modern's culinary standards. This role is an opportunity to work in a highly acclaimed environment where your expertise in wine, spirits, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will be the cornerstone of guest satisfaction. You will collaborate closely with the Beverage Director and other sommeliers, bartenders, and service staff, supporting the creativity and excellence of the beverage program. Integral to the role is the ability to educate and inspire the service team, enhancing their knowledge and passion for the beverage selections we offer. The Sommelier will also manage the wine program's financial performance by maintaining inventory levels aligned with business needs while increasing sales effectiveness. Flexibility and a willingness to grow in all service aspects are essential, allowing you to thrive in this dynamic, fast-paced, and prestigious hospitality setting. The role offers competitive pay, hourly wages supplemented with tips, and employment within a culture deeply rooted in enlightened hospitality—an approach that emphasizes care, creativity, and mutual respect.

Joining The Modern means becoming a part of a dedicated team that values excellence and continuous learning, motivated by a strong culture of inclusion and community. You will benefit from a supportive environment that encourages professional development and rewards performance with comprehensive benefits including health coverage, generous paid time off, retirement plans, and opportunities for mentorship. More than a job, this position offers the chance to engage with one of New York City's premier restaurants, embrace hospitality as an art, and contribute to delivering world-class experiences that leave lasting impressions on every guest. This opportunity is perfect for passionate individuals committed to raising the bar in hospitality and beverage service, looking to grow within a prestigious and innovative culinary institution.
