The Software Engineering Manager 2 - SW Development Lead role within Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is an exciting leadership position based onsite in Rancho Bernardo, CA, Palmdale, CA, or Oklahoma City, OK. This role blends technical expertise in software development with functional management responsibilities, acting as a bridge between software teams and Integrated Product Team leadership. The position requires managing a team of around 10-20 software engineers developing real-time, mission-critical applications using Agile methodologies. The candidate will lead planning, execution, delivery, and integration of software products while ensuring compliance with contractual cost, schedule, and technical requirements. Key responsibilities include managing budgets, schedules, Agile metrics, and risk, alongside facilitating technical guidance, software lifecycle participation, and quality assurance across the team’s deliverables.

This role demands active onsite presence without remote work options and involves approximately 25% travel to support program reviews and coordination activities. Candidates must possess a Top Secret security clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) access. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM or higher education as specified
  • 9 or more years of related engineering experience or equivalent advanced degree experience
  • Experience using Agile development methodologies
  • Experience in real-time software development for critical applications
  • 4 years of experience with C, C++, Python programming languages
  • Experience with real-time operating systems like VxWorks, Integrity, or Realtime Linux
  • Active Top Secret clearance with recent background investigation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain SAP access including upgrades
  • U.S. citizenship for clearance requirements
  • Capacity for up to 25% travel
  • Willingness and ability to work full-time onsite at specified locations

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 9 years of engineering experience or Master’s degree with 7 years or PhD with 4 years
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies, including roles as Product Owner, SCRUM Master, or team member
  • Experience developing flight critical, safety critical, medical, or mission critical real-time software
  • Recent relevant experience with at least two of C, C++, and Python programming languages
  • Experience with real-time operating systems such as Wind River VxWorks, Green Hills Integrity, or Realtime Linux
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance with recent background investigation or continuous evaluation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) access
  • Familiarity with embedded software architectures and requirements
  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface across all employee levels
  • Experience with Java microservices, GUI applications, threading, OOP, and design patterns preferred

Job Duties

  • Collaborate with software development, systems engineering, test automation, DevSecOps, and systems test organizations to meet mission engineering objectives
  • Serve as work package manager for planning, execution, and delivery of software products meeting contractual cost, schedule, and technical requirements
  • Manage a team of 10-20 individuals through the software development life cycle in an Agile environment
  • Report budget, scope, and schedule progress using Agile metrics and Earned Value Management System methodologies
  • Facilitate risk management and provide technical guidance to the team
  • Participate in design, implementation, testing, and delivery of software products
  • Support team allocation and Integrated Master Schedule task planning with coordination among IPT leads, software architects, and product owners
  • Oversee product quality and timeliness, identifying and resolving potential issues
  • Support program reviews and provide functional management including career guidance, performance management, staffing, interviewing, onboarding, and disciplinary actions
