This position is categorized as non-exempt and involves working directly with customers and team members to fulfill orders accurately and efficiently. The Barista is responsible for ensuring food safety, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the work area, and supporting inventory management through product checks and preparation. The successful candidate will embody Hy-Vee’s core competencies which include partnerships, a growth mindset, being results-oriented, customer-focused, and professionalism.

The Barista role requires strong interpersonal skills as they will greet customers warmly, assist with product selections, take orders both in-person and over the phone, and operate the cash register when required. Beyond serving coffee, the Barista ensures that product supplies are adequate and fresh, anticipates daily needs, and replenishes items as needed to keep the Coffee Shop running smoothly and efficiently.

In addition, the Barista supports general store efforts by assisting in other areas when necessary, handling dishes, ordering supplies, pricing products, and participating in special projects. Physical demands include the ability to perform medium work, involving lifting, standing, walking, and other movements essential to the duties of the position. Candidates should be prepared to work in a dynamic retail environment with some exposure to noise, cleaning chemicals, equipment hazards, and temperature variations.

Job Requirements

  • Must be able to perform medium work involving lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Visual acuity and abilities including color vision, depth perception
  • Physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions
  • Willingness to adhere to hygiene and dress codes
  • Availability to report to work on schedule

Job Qualifications

  • Less than high school education or equivalent experience
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Basic math skills including simple addition and subtraction
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong customer service skills
