Job Description
The National Audubon Society is a renowned nonprofit conservation organization with a rich history spanning 120 years. It pioneers in science-based, community-driven environmental impact aimed at protecting birds and their habitats, recognizing birds as vital indicators of the planet's health. Audubon operates across the Western Hemisphere, taking a collaborative and bipartisan approach spanning habitats, borders, and political spectrums to achieve meaningful and lasting conservation results. With a dedicated team of 800 staff and a support base of over 1.9 million people, Audubon is focused on securing a sustainable future for birds and nature alike. Audubon is committed not only to conservation but also to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in every aspect of its work, ensuring its mission is guided with integrity and innovation.
The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, managed by the National Audubon Society and located in south San Antonio, Texas, is a premier 1,200-acre wildlife refuge that welcomes visitors all year round. Managed in partnership with the San Antonio Water System (SAWS), the center is a vital environmental and educational hub featuring walking and driving trails, the historic Leeper House as a visitor center, and a small education pavilion. The center is dedicated to conservation education and offers opportunities for community engagement with nature. In this context, the Site Host position is a part-time, seasonal role designed for individuals who wish to live onsite in their RV. The role emphasizes guest safety, the security of the facility, and end-of-day operational support. Site Hosts are entrusted with responsibilities such as securing the grounds after hours, ensuring visitor compliance with closing times, and assisting with logistical support like facility rentals and maintenance communication. This position requires an average commitment of 5 to 10 hours per week during the assignment period from February to April 2026. Compensation is $19.00 per hour.
This position doesn’t just offer the chance to contribute to local conservation efforts; it also integrates into the larger mission of Audubon by fostering a welcoming and secure environment for visitors. Site Hosts collaborate closely with staff to uphold the organization’s values, including care for the natural world and the visitors it serves. The role is unique in that it requires living onsite at one of the RV pads, which are equipped with water, sewer, and electricity hookups, aligning with the lifestyle of work campers at national parks. Training is provided to support the Site Hosts in fulfilling their duties effectively. This role is ideal for those passionate about the outdoors, comfortable interacting with visitors of all ages, and capable of managing safety and facility operations independently while embodying Audubon’s commitment to conservation and community engagement.
