Job Description

Las Trampas School, Inc. is a well-established organization headquartered in Lafayette, California, dedicated to providing specialized services to individuals with developmental disabilities. The organization is deeply committed to empowering these individuals by enhancing their independence and quality of life. Situated at 3460 Lana Lane, Lafayette, Las Trampas serves the Contra Costa County community by offering comprehensive programs designed to meet the unique needs of the people it supports. As an equal opportunity employer, Las Trampas School does not discriminate based on race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, medical condition, genetic information, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, military status, or other protected characteristics. The company fosters an inclusive workplace culture that encourages employees to express their authentic selves and work collaboratively toward shared goals.

This specific role of Independent Living Skills (ILS) Instructor is integral to the mission of Las Trampas. The ILS Instructor operates primarily within the homes of participants throughout Contra Costa County, providing vital hands-on training designed to support individuals in achieving greater independence. Reporting directly to the ILS Facilitator, the instructor focuses on delivering individualized training aligned with each participant's Individual Program Plan (IPP) and Individual Service Plan (ISP). These plans are carefully developed by an interdisciplinary team including case managers, family members, and advocates, ensuring a holistic and person-centered approach to care.

The position offers part-time employment, with expected hours ranging from 8 to 15 per week, primarily in the afternoons on weekends including Saturday and Sunday. The ILS Instructor role is suited for those passionate about helping people with developmental disabilities maximize their potential in a least-restrictive environment. Responsibilities include teaching essential independent living skills such as money management, social interaction, community resource utilization, meal preparation, personal care, mobility, home safety, and emergency preparedness. Instruction involves various methods tailored to individual learning styles including demonstration, prompting, modeling, and repetition.

In addition to direct teaching, instructors participate actively as members of interdisciplinary teams, attending meetings and collaborating closely with all stakeholders involved in the participant's care. Documentation and data collection are essential aspects of the position, ensuring compliance with agency policies and regulatory requirements. The role demands a professional committed to continuous learning, demonstrated by participation in ongoing training sessions and adherence to Las Trampas’ personnel policies.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess an Associate’s degree or higher, although equivalent experience substituting for education is considered. At least one year of experience working in ILS or teaching individuals with developmental disabilities is strongly preferred. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with a valid California driver’s license, reliable personal vehicle, and adherence to driving standards for transporting participants as needed. Knowledge of community-based services and relevant laws supporting the rights and benefits of people with developmental disabilities is important.

Physical requirements for this position include the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, be seated for periods up to two hours, ambulate freely, lift up to 50 pounds, and have sufficient visual acuity for computer use and reading documentation. As a part-time employee, benefits include paid sick time, holiday pay for recognized holidays worked, flexible spending accounts for dependent care and health, commuter benefits, employee assistance programs, travel assistance, and a sign-on bonus of $1,000.

This role is ideal for compassionate, patient, and dedicated individuals eager to make a tangible difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Working within their homes and community settings offers a unique opportunity to foster personal growth and independence in a supportive, encouraging environment. The position emphasizes respect for individual dignity and promotes self-advocacy, health care management, and community involvement. Candidates who are self-motivated, culturally sensitive, and capable of working collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams will find this role rewarding and impactful.
