The Shuttle Driver role is a crucial operational position within Performance Foodservice that supports the efficient movement of goods across its extensive network. The primary responsibility is to transport empty trailers to various warehouse locations and deliver fully loaded trailers back to designated domicile and shuttle yard locations. Operating mainly on intrastate and interstate routes, this role requires adherence to strict Department of Transportation regulations and company safety policies to ensure timely and secure delivery of freight. The position features a schedule from Sunday through Thursday with dispatch beginning between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, reflecting a third-shift work pattern.

Shuttle Drivers at Performance Foodservice must be skilled in operating tandem trailers, tractor trailers, and straight trucks, handling all safety inspections and documentation meticulously before and after trips. This includes pre- and post-trip inspections, verifying freight security, and reporting safety concerns promptly. Drivers are also expected to engage professionally with customers, vendors, and coworkers, contributing positively to the company’s team-oriented culture. Duties extend beyond driving to include cargo handling, performing hook and unhook procedures safely, maintaining equipment cleanliness, and ensuring all operational paperwork is complete and accurate.

This position requires candidates to have a valid CDL A license with doubles endorsement, at least 12 months of commercial driving experience, and must meet federal and state regulatory requirements for commercial drivers. A clean motor vehicle report and the ability to pass a road test and pre-employment drug screening are mandatory. The role also demands physical capability to handle freight weighing between 60 to 90 pounds, use lifting equipment, and perform loading and unloading tasks as necessary.

Job Duties

  • perform all required safety checks including pre and post trip inspections of tractor truck and trailer according to department of transportation regulations
  • inspect tractor truck and trailer to ensure they meet company safety standards and take appropriate action as needed
  • report all safety issues and or repairs required
  • follow all dot regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • immediately report all safety hazards
  • inspect trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • ensure all required route paperwork is with tractor trailer load and available to driver upon dispatch
  • drive and deliver trailers according to predetermined route schedule
  • perform hook unhook procedures per safety guidelines
  • park and store tractor trailers in designated areas
  • ensure all equipment and freight are appropriately locked and or always secured
  • collect and secure damaged goods and customer returns in empty trailer to bring back to driver check in at base facility and complete necessary paperwork
  • unload all equipment materials and remove trash from trailers as required
  • complete daily record of hours of service and enter in log in accordance with federal dot state and company requirements
  • perform general housekeeping duties in tractor loading dock area and keep trailers clear and clean as required
  • perform other related duties as assigned
