Job Description

We are a dedicated bakery department within a larger retail grocery environment, committed to delivering high-quality baked goods and an exceptional customer experience. The bakery team is vital to our success, focusing on baking, mixing dough, icing, packaging, filling, and decorating pastries and bread items, while maintaining a clean, organized, and visually appealing department.

The bakery assistant role is designed to support the Bakery Manager in all aspects of the department's daily operations. This includes helping with the preparation of baked goods, adhering strictly to safety and sanitation standards, rotating products to maintain freshness, and ensuring accurate signage and displays. This position requires a strong commitment to quality, cleanliness, and customer service. The bakery team member will also be responsible for maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal food safety regulations and company policies. Physical demands are an integral part of the job, including standing for extended periods, lifting moderately heavy items, and working in varying temperature conditions.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to proficiently read, write, speak, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language
  • ability to assist the bakery manager
  • ability to stand, bend, twist, reach, push, pull and regularly lift 25 lbs, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • ability to work in varying temperatures
  • ability to work with fresh, dried and/or processed products, spices and powdered substances without negative allergic consequences
  • ability to tolerate dust and cleaning agents during routine housekeeping duties
  • ability to interact with customers in a friendly and helpful way
  • ability to work cooperatively with others
  • ability to work all assigned work schedules and comply with all time and attendance policies

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • experience in bakery or food preparation environment helpful
  • ability to follow recipes and quality standards
  • good communication skills in English
  • ability to interact with customers in a friendly and helpful manner
  • basic math skills for inventory and measuring
  • ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • knowledge of sanitation and food safety standards
  • physical ability to stand for long periods and lift moderate weights
  • familiarity with bakery equipment operation
  • understanding and adherence to company policies and safety standards.

Job Duties

  • Maintain a clean, neat, organized and safe work environment
  • maintain department sanitation and QA standards including safety, personal hygiene, clean cases, and equipment
  • clean and sanitize all work surfaces, utensils and equipment
  • keep floor clear of debris and spills
  • greet all customers and provide prompt, courteous service and assistance
  • maintain and properly use all department equipment as required
  • pack out product into display cases
  • rotate product to ensure freshness
  • ensure accurate signage for the department
  • prepare trays to company's and customer's satisfaction
  • perform all duties in accordance with local, state and federal regulations as pertain to the bakery operation
  • dress and groom according to company policy including uniform, name badge and hair restraint requirements
  • perform duties in accordance with QA hand washing standards and use disposable gloves when handling food
  • follow recipes to produce food products of specified flavor, texture, clarity, bouquet, or color
  • follow and adhere to weights and measures guidelines established by federal, state, local and civic standards
  • set up, operate, and tend equipment that cooks, mixes, blends or processes ingredients
  • rotate all merchandise in accordance with quality assurance standards to ensure freshness
  • prepare special order requests as required
  • track movement of sales on production logs
  • take complete and accurate inventory of supplies weekly and reorder supplies and ingredients as needed
  • check prices and be knowledgeable about location of items in the store
  • promote for sale any current charitable promotions to customers
  • stand at work station for scheduled shifts which may exceed 8 hours
  • receive deliveries
  • place reclamation in proper location
  • regularly lift, pull, push and rotate merchandise weighing up to 50 lbs
  • unload trucks and transport merchandise to bakery department
  • assist in other departments when instructed
  • perform all duties in accordance with company rules, policies, safety requirements and all health and civil code regulations
  • perform duties according to company HAZCOM program and adhere to label instructions for safe use of chemicals
  • follow approved procedures for receiving, code dating, preparing, storing, price marking, arranging and restocking products
  • handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy
  • understand and adhere to company shrink guidelines
  • check refrigeration equipment for proper performance and report failures
  • utilize and maintain equipment and report problems
  • complete all applicable department training programs
  • perform duties in accordance with ShopRite Service Priorities
  • maintain punctual and regular attendance
  • work overtime as assigned
  • work cooperatively with others
  • must be 18 years or older to operate balers, hi-los, power jacks and slicing machines
  • perform other duties as assigned.
