Job Description
HomeFirst is a well-established nonprofit organization that has been passionately committed to ending homelessness in the Bay Area since its founding in 1980. Over the past 45 years, HomeFirst has built a reputation for delivering effective, low-barrier programming and strong systems leadership that meet individuals where they are. They provide comprehensive support and resources addressing both immediate shelter needs and long-term housing stability. HomeFirst views housing as a universal human right and understands that homelessness is a complex social issue requiring collaborative solutions involving community engagement and multi-faceted services.
Operating the Emergency Interim Housing (EIH) program, HomeFirst targets unhoused single adults by offering emergency housing that's safe, client-centered, and comprehensive in scope. The EIH program involves three key phases – Emergency Interim Housing, Transition Period, and Bridge Housing – which are thoughtfully designed to support unhoused adults through recovery and eventual stable housing. The EIH site in San Jose, CA, is an expansive facility offering private bedrooms with restrooms and showers, along with communal spaces including a shared kitchen, computer lab, pet area, and vehicle parking. With 24/7 operation backed by on-site security services, the program is referral-based and does not allow drop-in services. Supportive services, community engagement opportunities, and direct housing assistance collectively empower participants to progress toward housing stability.
The Shift Supervisor role at HomeFirst for the EIH Rue Ferrari Expansion program is a key leadership position within this vital community service. Reporting directly to the EIH Program Manager, the Shift Supervisor oversees the daily operational management and supervision of Resident Advocates. This position is hybrid in nature and covers swing and graveyard shifts, with an expected work schedule of about 32 hours per week. The compensation rate is competitive at $38.47 per hour.
The primary mission of the Shift Supervisor is to ensure the program maintains compliance with service delivery standards while fostering a secure, welcoming, and supportive environment for clients and staff alike. This includes direct client service responsibilities such as engaging collaboratively with management to uphold service quality, ensuring participant safety, enforcing program rules, and responding effectively to emergencies. The supervisor also supports administrative efforts including staff scheduling, coverage, training, recruitment, and documentation to maintain operational efficiency.
Importantly, the Shift Supervisor provides job coaching and individualized supervision to Resident Advocates, helping maintain high performance and supporting professional development. They facilitate workshops on topics like financial literacy, tenant rights, job readiness, and credit repair, empowering clients with skills to improve their housing prospects and overall quality of life. The role demands capabilities in crisis intervention, de-escalation, trauma-informed care, and client-centered practices. Maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and adhering to agency protocols is essential.
Beyond client-facing duties, the Shift Supervisor also plays a representative role for HomeFirst, interacting with volunteers, donors, community members, and partner organizations to promote HomeFirst's mission and programs. The job supports organizational equity principles by treating all clients and staff with dignity and respect, and fostering a diverse, inclusive environment that values lived experiences and promotes social justice.
The ideal candidate will bring compassion, strong leadership, and relevant social service experience, particularly with unhoused populations. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package including full employer-paid medical, dental, and vision; wellness programs like chiropractic care and mental health support; retirement plans with matching; paid holidays and leave; and additional perks such as pet insurance and an Employee Assistance Program. HomeFirst is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and providing accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
