The role of Meat Manager involves overseeing the meat department operations to ensure optimal service delivery and efficient management of inventory and staff. This position is full-time and non-exempt, with compensation based on hourly wages. The Meat Manager reports directly to the Assistant Branch Manager or Branch Manager and plays a central role in ensuring all aspects of the meat department meet high standards of quality, safety, cleanliness, and customer engagement.

The Meat Manager is responsible for receiving meat products and ensuring that aisles, freezers, and refrigerators are well-stocked, properly labeled, and clean. They supervise the placement, rotation, signage, and attractive displays of meat products, guaranteeing the department's visual appeal and compliance with regulatory standards. Supervision includes Assistant Meat Managers, Meat Supervisors, and stockers, overseeing schedules, performance, and training to foster a productive and knowledgeable team.

Key duties also involve developing schedules, monitoring employee performance, and recommending disciplinary measures or terminations as necessary. The Meat Manager trains employees on job responsibilities and safe operation of equipment, interviews candidates, and contributes to hiring decisions. They enforce HACCP standards through inspections and audits to maintain food safety and manage inventory levels meticulously to prevent product shrinkage and spoilage.

Maintaining equipment in refrigerated and freezer units is integral to this role, ensuring maintenance contracts and schedules are followed to avoid breakdowns. The manager oversees the ordering process to balance competitive pricing with minimizing excess inventory and spoilage. Employees are trained to competently use machinery such as Toledo scales and Dennison label machines.

Organizational skills are essential for coordinating product tagging, cleanliness routines, proper stocking on racks, and waste handling. The Meat Manager also communicates inventory shortages to the Inventory Controller after accurate system and physical checks. Attention to detail is required to synchronize pricing labels with flyers and promotional material.

Creative merchandising is vital for the department's success, involving strategic aisle layouts, logical product adjacencies, space allocation, and setting up impulse buying areas that maximize sales potential. Regular self-audits of the meat department ensure sustained compliance and operational excellence. This position demands a high level of interpersonal skills, commitment to company values, and a strong customer service orientation, contributing to a positive shopping experience and customer loyalty.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or high school diploma or GED with at least 4 years experience in customer service or appropriate education and experience combination
  • ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals and technical procedures

Job Duties

  • Ensure proper customer service and develop relationships with large customers
  • supervise all activities in meat department including product placement, rotation, signage, and displays
  • maintain department appearance, cleanliness, and adherence to government and corporate ordinances
  • develop schedules, monitor performance, and recommend discipline
  • train employees in job responsibilities and safe operating procedures
  • interview candidates and recommend hires
  • discipline employees and recommend terminations
