Job Description
This job opening is for the position of Shift Manager at a well-established Quick Service Restaurant (QSR), a segment of the fast-food industry known for quick service, quality food, and efficient operations. The restaurant emphasizes upholding the highest standards in food safety, cleanliness, customer service, and operational excellence. The Shift Manager role is vital for maintaining these standards during operational shifts, ensuring seamless restaurant function, team coordination, and customer satisfaction.
The Shift Manager functions under the direction of the Restaurant Manager and leads the team during assigned shifts, which include opening, closing, and mid-shifts. This position requires full certification, including completion of the Shift Leader training path and ServSafe certification, reflecting the core commitment to food safety and operational standards. The role offers multiple levels of responsibilities and opportunities for career development, with promotion dependent on demonstrated skills, experience, and operational knowledge.
Primary responsibilities for all Shift Managers include ensuring the restaurant remains clean, sanitary, and well-maintained following company protocols; managing costs effectively within budgets including labor, food, supplies, and other expenses; and supervising all aspects of the shift including team member direction, cash register setup, shift transitions, and administrative tasks. Shift Managers are also expected to uphold safety and security protocols to foster a safe environment for team members and patrons.
The role has four progressive levels, starting from Shift Level 1, requiring availability for at least 3 days per week and running a minimum of one shift independently. Shift Level 2 increases availability to 4 days per week with responsibilities expanding into independent shift management, inventory processes, and deeper understanding of labor percentage impacts. Level 3 demands 5 days of work including weekends, with leadership over all shift operations, inventory, and food ordering, along with a strong focus on cost control and operational efficiency. Shift Level 4 requires open availability with extensive leadership duties, including mentoring junior shift managers and contributing to overall restaurant performance goals.
To succeed, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old, and hold ServSafe certification. Strong communication skills, the ability to analyze and adjust labor and food costs, sound judgment, flexibility, and leadership capabilities are essential. The position involves a dynamic work environment with physical demands that include lifting, standing, and operating kitchen and cash handling equipment.
This is a crucial leadership role that requires both operational expertise and team management skills in a fast-paced QSR environment. The Shift Manager directly influences the customer experience and the smooth running of the restaurant during their shifts, making it a rewarding opportunity for those committed to quality and excellence in hospitality and food service.
