The role of Shift Leader at Dairy Hut Creamery is a vital position responsible for managing all restaurant activities during a shift. This leadership role involves working closely with the Restaurant Management Team to ensure that the restaurant operates smoothly and efficiently, consistent with the business plan. The Shift Leader supervises team members, monitors their performance, and enforces company policies and safety standards to maintain a productive and positive work environment.

Shift Leaders are expected to be proactive in leading the team, organizing shift schedules, delegating responsibilities, and ensuring that operational tasks—from food preparation to cleanliness—are completed effectively. This role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to handle guest concerns professionally, and a strong sense of accountability for the restaurant’s success during their shift. Shift Leaders also play a key role in training new and current team members, providing feedback to promote high standards of service and teamwork.

This position demands a flexible schedule, including availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and opening and closing shifts to meet the dynamic needs of the restaurant. Physical endurance is essential as the role involves standing for long periods, bending, stooping, lifting up to 75 pounds, and working in fast-paced, warm environments. The ideal candidate embraces a positive attitude, is committed to guest satisfaction, and excels in organization, planning, and problem-solving.

Shift Leaders at Dairy Hut Creamery also handle administrative responsibilities such as balancing cash drawers, preparing deposits, completing daily paperwork, and maintaining compliance with food and cash control guidelines. Job Requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Current student or high school diploma/GED preferred
  • certified in all stations following the DHC training program
  • must be at least 18 years old
  • fluent in English

Job Duties

  • Follow the steps outlined in the DHC training program to learn and train new skills, duties, and responsibilities
  • abide and enforce the rules and direction given by the restaurant management team and refrain from insubordination
  • communicate to their immediate supervisor when additional training guidance and practice is needed
  • effectively and consistently perform required ops walks and Q&A checks to address areas of opportunity
  • organize shift schedules for team members and monitor attendance, tardiness, and time off
  • assign duties to specific team members based on role and skill level
  • understand how each job responsibility impacts guests, the team, and overall restaurant operations and success
  • greet guests, record orders, and serve food and beverages with a consistently positive and helpful attitude
  • ensure team members work together to prepare menu items following cooking instructions, safety procedures, and sanitary requirements
  • use specific kitchen machinery and equipment such as ice cream dispensers, fryers, warmers, etc.
  • ensure restaurant cleanliness is conducted daily by delegating tasks such as clearing tables, sweeping, mopping floors, washing, sanitizing, disinfecting kitchen utensils and high touch-point areas, and servicing restrooms
  • handle guests’ concerns and complaints professionally and calmly to resolve problems according to restaurant policy
  • maintain a neat and tidy appearance by wearing a uniform and adhering to the uniform policy
  • are performance-oriented and driven, understanding performance expectations and results
  • provide direction, supervision, and feedback to maintain high productivity and team morale
  • communicate team member work performance to management and appropriately address performance issues
  • train new and current team members
  • balance cash drawers and prepare cash deposits as assigned
  • effectively plan, organize, and implement all daily operational routines and activities
  • complete all required administrative duties and daily paperwork including checklists
  • supervise and perform closing and/or opening activities as directed
  • establish an environment of trust to ensure honest, open, and direct communication
  • role model and set a positive example for the team in all business and personnel practices
  • follow all company guidelines for food and cash controls
  • use all products, supplies, and equipment properly
