The role of Shift Leader at Sweetgreen is a dynamic leadership position designed for individuals passionate about food, quality service, and team empowerment. Shift Leaders at Sweetgreen are pivotal in managing daily restaurant operations with a focus on delivering exceptional guest experiences while upholding the company’s core values. This role requires multitasking prowess, strong communication skills, and the ability to lead by example in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Shift Leaders act as on-the-ground managers who support their teams by stepping into various roles during busy shifts, particularly during peak hours or when the team is short-staffed. They exhibit strong problem-solving abilities and maintain calm and professionalism under pressure, maintaining the smooth flow of operations.
In addition to supporting daily operational tasks, Shift Leaders are responsible for managing food safety standards, preventing allergen cross-contamination, and ensuring compliance with health and safety policies to maintain a safe environment for guests and staff alike. They oversee the coordination of multiple tasks including line operations, technology tools, and guest interactions, ensuring accuracy and quality in every aspect of service. Job Requirements
- Meet all minimum requirements of the Kitchen Lead role including Team Member functions
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Shift Leader or Supervisor
- Experience in fast-paced environments such as restaurant, retail, or hospitality
- Ability to coordinate multiple tasks while maintaining operational standards
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) of the work location
- Availability to work at least 30 hours per week
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
Job Qualifications
- Proven leadership experience with strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to make confident decisions under pressure
- Excellent communication skills fostering positive team culture
- Experience mentoring employees and delivering exceptional guest experiences
- Highly organized and reliable multitasker
- Experience in scheduling, coaching, and performance oversight
- Food Handler or ServSafe certification preferred
Job Duties
- Step into any station during shifts as needed, especially during peak hours or understaffed times
- Handle first-level customer concerns, including managing allergy-related requests to prevent cross-contamination
- Oversee multiple tasks and systems such as line operations, tech tools, and guest interactions simultaneously
- Use clear verbal communication to delegate tasks, resolve problems in real time, and align team and customer needs
- Monitor food quality, order accuracy, safety protocols, and digital reporting
- Enforce food safety procedures and maintain allergen awareness
- Ensure team compliance with restaurant policies and maintain a safe environment for guests and staff
- Stay calm and professional during high-pressure or high-volume situations
- Perform all essential functions as defined in the Kitchen Lead role, including all Team Member functions
