The Shift Leader role at Sweetgreen is a pivotal leadership position focused on supporting daily restaurant operations while upholding the company’s mission of building healthier communities through access to real food. Serving as a bridge between team members and management, the Shift Leader manages the flow of service during shifts, especially at peak times or when the restaurant is understaffed. This position requires a leader who can multitask effectively, oversee food safety protocols, resolve customer concerns, and maintain a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for guests and employees alike.

In this role, Shift Leaders take on a broad range of responsibilities to ensure smooth restaurant operations. They engage hands-on across all stations to support the team wherever needed, especially during busy hours or unexpected callouts. Excellent communication skills are essential as Shift Leaders delegate tasks, provide coaching and mentorship, and address real-time challenges with composure. Attention to detail is critical for monitoring food quality, safety procedures, order accuracy, and digital reporting to maintain the high standards Sweetgreen is known for. Shift Leaders also play a key role in enforcing food safety to prevent cross-contamination, ensuring allergen awareness is maintained at all times.

Job Requirements

  • Meet all minimum requirements of the Kitchen Lead role including team member functions
  • One or more years of experience in a Shift Leader or Supervisor role
  • Experience in fast-paced environments such as restaurant, retail, or hospitality
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks while maintaining operational standards
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) of the work location
  • Must be able to work at least 30 hours per week
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • Proven leadership experience with strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to make confident decisions under pressure

  • Experience in scheduling, coaching, and performance oversight

Job Duties

  • Support team by stepping into any station during shifts as needed
  • Handle first-level customer concerns including allergy assistance and order accuracy
  • Oversee multiple tasks including line operations, technology tools, and guest interactions simultaneously
  • Communicate clearly to delegate tasks, solve problems, and align team and customer needs
  • Monitor food quality, order accuracy, safety protocols, and digital reporting
  • Enforce food safety procedures to prevent cross-contamination and maintain allergen awareness
  • Ensure compliance with restaurant policies to maintain a safe environment
  • Stay calm and professional during high-pressure or high-volume situations
  • Perform essential Kitchen Lead duties including team member functions
