Job Description

The Salvation Army is a global charitable organization dedicated to meeting human needs and providing support for individuals and families during challenging times. Known for its extensive network of emergency shelters, rehabilitation centers, and community programs, the Salvation Army strives to offer safety, security, and compassion to vulnerable populations. This particular role is situated within one of their emergency shelter facilities, where the primary focus is to ensure the wellbeing and comfort of shelter clients through vigilant oversight and supportive duties. The shelter operates around the clock, often requiring staff to work varying schedules including evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts to maintain continuous care and security.

This position is a casual, part-time opportunity with an hourly pay rate between $13 and $14, making it suitable for individuals seeking flexible work hours. The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of support functions that contribute to a safe and orderly shelter environment. Responsibilities include monitoring the adherence of clients to the house rules, maintaining building security, performing light housekeeping tasks, and logging daily shelter activities. The work environment is designed to minimize physical discomfort, but it requires the ability to move between sitting, standing, and walking frequently within the facility. A calm demeanor and quick response to emergencies are crucial in this role, as it involves handling sensitive situations with care and professionalism.

Besides regular shelter duties, the role also plays a key part in inclement weather shelter operations, which include preparing sleeping and dining areas before clients arrive, managing the check-in process, and ensuring distribution of necessary items such as blankets. Enforcing curfews, quiet hours, and general client safety are essential for providing a trustworthy and secure environment. The position demands strong communication skills, a high level of responsibility, and the ability to work independently while maintaining detailed records. Applicants should be comfortable with non-traditional work hours and possess the physical capability to conduct light lifting and movement during their shift.

Overall, this opportunity provides a meaningful work experience within a respected humanitarian organization. It offers not only a chance to contribute positively to the community but also an environment that values its employees by providing benefits such as paid leave and a comprehensive benefits package. Ideal candidates are those who are compassionate, vigilant, and ready to support others in times of need while adhering to established policies and procedures.
