Job Description
The Salvation Army Corps Shelter is a well-established, community-focused residential facility providing vital services to individuals in need of overnight shelter and support. We are currently seeking a dedicated and responsible Shelter Attendant to join our team. This full-time role involves overnight shifts and requires vigilance, empathy, and excellent organizational skills. The Shelter Attendant assists residents staying in the Corps shelter overnight by performing client intake procedures and preparing detailed client intake records. The position involves monitoring resident activity during the assigned shift to ensure safety, security, and compliance with house rules. Maintaining thorough and accurate logs, reports, and records is a critical component of the position, along with upholding the cleanliness and order of the facility. Security responsibilities include conducting routine checks, monitoring door locks, arming and disarming alarms following established policies, and promptly responding to emergencies in a calm and effective manner.
Key responsibilities include performing client intake, including sexual offender checks, and enforcing compliance with house regulations to create a safe living environment. The role also includes assigning daily chores such as cooking, cleaning, and maintenance to clients and ensuring these tasks are completed satisfactorily. Active participation in facility maintenance, including supplies and equipment inspections, is expected to ensure compliance with established standards and accountability for property. This position demands someone who can remain composed under pressure, demonstrating sound decision-making during emergency situations.
The Shelter Attendant role requires the ability to meet attendance expectations reliably and communicate effectively in English. Furthermore, skills in data entry and basic computer operation are necessary for maintaining accurate documentation. Physical requirements include the ability to perform a combination of sitting, standing, and walking; occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds; and enduring typical working conditions within a residential facility that is largely free from extreme environmental discomforts.

Job Requirements
- Ability to meet attendance requirements
- ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively
- ability to perform data entry into a computer
- ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action
- ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing and walking on a frequent change basis
- distance of travel is usually within the same building
- limited amounts of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light to heavy objects (up to 30 lbs.) occasionally
- work is performed in a residential facility where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- one-year prior experience performing security or social services work in a shelter or similar environment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- valid state drivers license (preferred)
- food handlers certification (or ability to obtain within established timeframe)
- CPR or first aid certification (or ability to obtain within established timeframe)
Job Duties
- Assist residents staying in the Corps shelter overnight
- perform client intake procedures and prepare client intake records
- monitor the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security, and compliance to house rules
- maintain accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information
- ensure that facility is maintained in a neat and proper order
- ensure clients comply with house rules
- check client's baggage for drugs, alcohol, weapons, and pornography
- record incidents and notify supervisor of any special circumstances or unusual problems
- ensure security of facility and clients
- arm and disarm alarms in accordance with lodge policy
- lock and secure areas inappropriate for client entry
- conduct routine checks of the facilities to ensure that all doors are locked and that nothing is amiss
- respond to emergencies in a calm manner and initiate appropriate actions in accordance with established policies and procedures
- perform client intake procedures including running sexual offender checks
- check clients into the shelter
- prepare and monitor client intake cards
- prepare and maintain resident roster
- assign daily cooking, cleaning, and maintenance chores to clients and ensure completion of such
- participate in the cleaning and maintenance of facilities, supplies, and equipment
- inspect facility on a routine basis to ensure compliance with established standards
- ensure return and accountability of The Salvation Army property (linens, etc.)
