The position available is for a Sheet Metal Mechanic, based in Norfolk, VA. This role is critical to the fabrication and installation of sheet metal parts used in shipboard structures. The Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for laying out, fabricating, and installing sheet metal elements such as bulkheads, lockers, outfitting, furnishings, and various brackets, utilizing materials with thicknesses up to 1/8 inch. This role requires precision and technical skill in the prefabrication, fitting, and installation of these components, preparing templates for nonstandard parts, and working with a variety of mechanical fastening methods including welding and riveting.
Job duties include fabricating templates, assisting with measurements and layouts, grinding and cleaning surfaces, rivet fastening, maintaining cleanliness of the worksite, delivering materials, acting as Fire Watch as required, and participating in special projects. The position may also require travel to different locations, reflecting the dynamic nature of the work and the geographical spread of projects managed by Delphinus.
Candidates must have a solid understanding of safety protocols and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, safety rules, and maintenance instructions. They should be able to apply common sense and problem-solving skills in standardized situations and possess basic computer skills for data entry. The role typically requires between 1 to 5 years of related experience, with a high school diploma or GED complemented by technical or vocational training being essential educational credentials.
Physical demands of the role include standing, walking, climbing, lifting objects up to 50 pounds, and working in varied shipboard environments that may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts, confined spaces, fumes, and airborne particles. The noise level is generally moderate.
