Michigan State University is a globally recognized public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan. Renowned for its commitment to innovation and excellence in education, the university provides a vibrant and diverse academic environment serving a large and dynamic student body. Within its campus, the Residential and Hospitality Services department is dedicated to enhancing the student experience by offering quality dining and support services. This department manages various food service operations that promote not only nutritional well-being but also community and sustainability on campus. Michigan State University employs a wide range of support staff and culinary professionals committed to delivering exceptional service to students, faculty, and staff. The university values an inclusive work environment and prides itself on providing equal opportunity employment without discrimination across race, gender, age, or other protected statuses.
The Shaw Cook I position is a full-time role within the Culinary Services Dining Operations of MSU’s Residential and Hospitality Services. This role is critically important in supporting the daily food service needs at Shaw Hall, one of the university's main dining facilities. The cook will be responsible for preparing, seasoning, cooking, and portioning a wide array of foods, adhering strictly to prescribed recipes and culinary standards to ensure consistent quality and safety. Working as part of a diverse team in an ever-changing work environment, the Shaw Cook I must maintain organized work areas and effectively supervise student staff to deliver exemplary food service to a predominantly student-based clientele.
Shaw Cook I is designated as a critical status position, which means the individual holding this role is expected to work during university closures or emergencies such as snow days, unless otherwise indicated by remote work agreements. This requirement highlights the essential nature of dining operations to campus life. The typical work schedule includes three shifts from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday through Friday, and on weekends, with Tuesday off, supporting operational coverage throughout the week. The position involves some physical demands, including occasional lifting of weights between 26 to 75 pounds, emphasizing the need for physical stamina and adherence to health and sanitation standards. The Shaw Cook I position offers a unique opportunity for those passionate about culinary arts to contribute to a student-centered environment, enhance their cooking skills, and grow professionally within a respected academic institution. Salary information signals a pay rate of approximately $20.73 per hour, reflective of the full-time status and scope of responsibilities involved.
Overall, this position is well suited for a customer-oriented individual who thrives in a flexible work setting, enjoys teamwork, and possesses the technical cooking knowledge necessary to meet customer demands and dynamic service requirements. With a focus on quality, safety, and customer satisfaction, the Shaw Cook I role at Michigan State University's Residential and Hospitality Services stands as a meaningful career path within the higher education food service arena.
