Job Description
StarTran is a vital division within the City of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) Department, dedicated to providing reliable and safe transit services to the citizens of Lincoln. As part of LTU, which comprises nearly 600 team members, StarTran fuels community connectivity by offering transit, transportation, and utility services year-round. The department values building strong relationships within its divisions and with community partners, fostering a collaborative, forward-thinking work environment where environmental stewardship is a top priority. StarTran prides itself on recognizing individual strengths within its team members and providing additional training opportunities as well as diverse paths for career advancement. Employees benefit from a comprehensive package including retirement matching, paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, and health, dental, and vision insurance plans. The City of Lincoln and StarTran seek dedicated individuals who want to contribute to enhancing the community's quality of life through excellent transit operations.
The role of Bus Service Worker at StarTran is a highly important position that supports the smooth operation and safety of the transit fleet. This full-time position operates on 8-hour shifts between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., with the specific shift assigned through a bidding process and Sundays off. The Bus Service Worker performs essential semi-skilled work that combines mechanical tasks with fleet upkeep and general maintenance duties. This role is considered sub apprentice mechanic level, providing a great opportunity for individuals interested in the transit transportation industry and mechanical servicing. The primary function of the position is to maintain the fleet by conducting fueling, cleaning, and basic mechanical checks on buses to ensure they are safe, clean, and always ready for operation.
Daily duties include driving buses to service lanes for inspection, checking vital fluids, fueling up the vehicles, and changing items such as oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze as needed. Maintaining cleanliness both inside and outside the buses is also a critical part of the job, including washing the exterior, spot cleaning interiors, and dusting frequently used areas like seats and dashboards. Additionally, the Bus Service Worker handles replacing farebox vaults and assists mechanics with light repairs including tire changes and repairs. They operate tools such as battery boosters, winches, and snow blades, playing an active role in roadside assistance when buses experience issues while in service. Weekly inspections under the chassis, draining air tanks, adjusting brakes, and performing road calls contribute to ongoing fleet safety.
Beyond vehicle care, this role extends to the upkeep of transit facilities and grounds. Responsibilities include cleaning shelters, removing snow to maintain accessibility during winter, and repairing benches. The Bus Service Worker is also tasked with light building maintenance, such as fixing lights, plumbing, doors, and windows, ensuring that the transit environment is safe and welcoming for both employees and passengers. The position is safety sensitive and subject to mandatory drug testing policies, emphasizing the critical importance of safety in all aspects of work. Candidates are required to possess or obtain a valid Nebraska commercial driver's license (CDL), with assistance and reimbursement offered for training and licensing requirements.
Overall, the Bus Service Worker position at StarTran is integral to the transit system's reliability and efficiency. It offers motivated individuals the chance to engage in practical mechanical work while contributing to the community's transportation infrastructure. This position is perfect for candidates who enjoy a hands-on work environment, teamwork, and taking pride in maintaining high standards of safety and cleanliness. With strong city backing, competitive benefits, and opportunities for growth, StarTran invites enthusiastic candidates to join its team and help keep Lincoln moving smoothly every day.
