The Service Porter position at Martin Automotive Group/Glendora Chevrolet is essential to the seamless operation of the dealership’s service department. This non-exempt role reports directly to the Service Manager, Parts Manager, or General Manager, and involves no direct supervisory responsibilities. The Service Porter is responsible for the safe and efficient movement and cleaning of customer and company vehicles within the dealership premises. This role requires a professional demeanor and courteous interaction with customers, embodying the company’s commitment to superior service at all times.

The day-to-day duties of the Service Porter include driving vehicles to various designated areas such as service lanes, service stalls, and the parking lot, as well as transporting customers to and from locations as needed. Maintaining the neatness and organization of both new and used vehicle lots in accordance with dealership display standards is a key responsibility, along with the installation and removal of seat covers, floor mats, and key tags to protect vehicles during service. The Service Porter frequently utilizes two-way radios to maintain clear and efficient communication with service staff, ensuring smooth operational flow.

Thorough cleaning and sanitizing of vehicles upon drop off and pickup help maintain the dealership’s high standards of customer care and vehicle presentation. The position entails accountability for vehicle keys, including securing and tracking them using a Key Tracking Machine, which is critical for dealership security and operational integrity. The role also involves routine inspections of vehicles for any damage or missing items, prompt reporting of any issues, and meticulous handling of vehicle-related paperwork such as keys and repair orders.

Other responsibilities include sweeping floors, keeping the dealership lot free of trash, cutting tree branches where necessary, and helping with various miscellaneous tasks as assigned. The Service Porter plays an important role in supporting service advisors by directing customers appropriately and ensuring that vehicles are retrieved promptly for customers upon payment of repair orders. The position demands punctuality, adherence to company policies, effective communication, strong problem-solving skills, and a friendly, professional attitude.

This position requires a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and background check. Physical stamina is necessary due to the requirement to stand, walk on uneven surfaces, lift objects up to 25-30 pounds, and perform repetitive tasks for up to 8-10 hours a day. The Service Porter operates in an environment that can be noisy and may be exposed to varying weather conditions, requiring resilience and adaptability.

Job Duties

  • Drives vehicles to and from service lane, service stalls, and parking lot as needed
  • Drives customers to and from their home or other locations
  • Keeps new and used vehicle lots neat and orderly, moving cars as directed and in accordance with dealership display standards
  • Installs and removes disposable seat covers, floor mats and tags keys from customer and company vehicles
  • Uses two-way radios to communicate with staff
  • Vacuums and washes with soap, water and other chemicals, customer, new and used company vehicles
  • Clean and sanitizes all touch area of vehicles at drop off and pick up of unit
