Job Description
New York Blood Center (NYBC), founded in 1964, is a prominent non-profit organization that has been serving the tri-state area for over 60 years. The current opening is for a Maintenance Worker position primarily responsible for ensuring cleanliness and safety within assigned NYBC facilities. This role demands diligent attention to detail and a strong commitment to maintaining sanitary environments, essential for supporting the critical operations of NYBC. The Maintenance Worker is tasked with collecting and disposing of all types of waste, including regular, recyclable, and medical waste, by safely operating compactor equipment. Additionally, the role involves cleaning various surfaces ranging from floors to carpets, restrooms, office furniture, and windows. Responsibilities also extend to maintaining cafeteria cleanliness, supporting meeting setups and cleanups, and managing supplies efficiently. In colder months, duties include snow and debris removal from walkways, including salting as necessary to prevent accidents and hazards. The position occasionally involves security-related relief duties and emergency response tasks such as packing freezers with dry ice to safeguard medical materials in case of freezer malfunctions. Safety and training meeting attendance is mandatory to keep updated with best practices and compliance standards. This position requires one year of experience in office or industrial maintenance, preferably with a High School Diploma or equivalent, and any skilled combination of education, training, and experience that equips the candidate to perform these essential functions effectively.
The employment offers a competitive hourly wage of $20.00 for locations in New York City and Westchester County, with salaries adjusted accordingly for other locations based on market rates and the candidate’s skills and experience. Job Requirements

- Ability to operate compactor equipment
- Ability to perform cleaning and maintenance duties efficiently
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting, bending and standing for extended periods

Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Collects and disposes of all types of waste including regular, recyclable and medical and operates compactor equipment
- Sweeps, mops, dusts, strips, spray buffs and waxes all flooring surfaces, and vacuums, deodorizes, and shampoos all carpeted surfaces
- Cleans and sanitizes all sinks, toilets, stalls, urinals, mirrors, waste receptacles and office furniture and replenishes restroom and cafeteria supplies
- Cleans, dusts, and sanitizes walls, windows, ceilings, lighting fixtures, pipes, waste containers, and other surfaces as necessary
- Provides cafeteria/meetings services to include set-up and clean-up, maintenance of coffee equipment, general cleanliness of the cafeteria, and ordering/stocking of cafeteria/meeting supplies
- Performs relief responsibilities including but not limited to security function
- Removes snow and debris from walkways and salts as necessary
