Job Description

NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest public health care system in the United States, dedicated to providing high-quality health services to diverse communities across New York City. With a commitment to accessibility, equity, and patient-centered care, NYC Health + Hospitals serves millions of New Yorkers in need of medical attention regardless of their ability to pay. One of its key institutions, Harlem Hospital Center, has been a vital part of the Harlem community since 1887, offering a broad range of specialized services that include medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and family support services. The hospital serves residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood, and is recognized as the largest hospital in the region capable of treating the most critically ill patients. Harlem Hospital provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, including dentistry, oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment, making it an essential source of comprehensive health care in northern Manhattan.

At NYC Health + Hospitals, the mission centers on delivering health services of the highest quality, without exception. Every employee embodies the ICARE values — Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence — to foster effective, empathetic communication and partnerships between patients, families, and healthcare providers. The organization emphasizes a person-centered approach to healthcare, ensuring that every interaction reflects these core values.

The role available is a position within the Food Services, Housekeeping, Maintenance, and Grounds Operations departments at Harlem Hospital Center. This is an hourly position with a shift from 4:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. The successful candidate will perform duties of ordinary difficulty and responsibility, working under direct supervision to support essential operational functions that contribute to a safe, clean, and efficient hospital environment. This role is vital for ensuring that food services operate smoothly by preparing and delivering patient meals, maintaining high standards of hygiene, and supporting cooking and serving tasks. It also involves housekeeping activities, such as cleaning and sterilizing patient areas, maintaining floors, managing waste, and supporting infection control practices. Additionally, candidates may be tasked with grounds maintenance duties like lawn care, snow removal, and debris clearing to provide a physically safe external environment.

This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in collaborative, service-oriented settings and who appreciate the importance of their role in supporting a major healthcare facility. The candidate will be part of a dedicated team that supports the hospital’s daily operational needs, enabling healthcare professionals to focus on delivering patient care. The responsibilities include setting up workstations, assembling and delivering patient trays according to dietary requirements, cleaning kitchen and dining areas, maintaining cleanliness in hospital spaces, handling waste management, performing basic maintenance and groundskeeping tasks, and assisting with loading and unloading supplies.

NYC Health + Hospitals offers a supportive work environment where teamwork and respect are highly valued. Employees receive in-service training to stay current with best practices and are encouraged to participate in ongoing professional development. This role not only provides a chance to contribute directly to the health and comfort of patients but also to become part of a historic institution that has played a central role in the Harlem community for over a century. The hospital’s commitment to patient-centered care and community health makes this a meaningful and rewarding employment opportunity.
