Job Description

NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest public health care system in the United States, dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive, and accessible health services to all New Yorkers regardless of their ability to pay. The organization is known for its commitment to community health and excellence in patient care, operating a network of hospitals and clinics across New York City. Among its facilities, Harlem Hospital Center stands out as a key institution with deep historical roots dating back to 1887. It serves as a critical medical hub for Harlem and neighboring areas like West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood, offering a wide array of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and family support services. Harlem Hospital Center is the largest hospital in the area and is equipped to treat the most seriously ill patients. The hospital offers over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, including dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment programs.

The role at NYC Health + Hospitals focuses on supporting the Hospital's operations through participation in food services, housekeeping, maintenance, and grounds operations under direct supervision. This position is vital in maintaining the health care environment's functionality, cleanliness, and safety to foster high standards of patient care and comfort. The employee in this role will be responsible for routine tasks of ordinary difficulty and responsibility, contributing to the smooth operation of various service areas. Work shifts for this position commonly include morning schedules such as 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. or 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., offering a structured and consistent workday.

In food services, duties include preparing and assembling patients' meals according to dietary requirements, serving food at proper temperatures, maintaining cleanliness of kitchen and dining areas, and safely handling food supplies and waste disposal. This ensures that patients receive nutritious and hygienic meals, supporting their recovery and wellbeing.

In housekeeping, responsibilities encompass cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining health care settings, including floors, furniture, medical equipment, and bathrooms. The role requires meticulous attention to infection control through the use of approved cleaning agents and disinfectants. Additionally, the employee manages waste disposal and assists with logistical tasks like loading and unloading supplies, and maintaining cleaning equipment.

Maintenance and grounds operations entail tasks such as lawn and shrub care, snow removal, ensuring safe walkways, and handling supplies and equipment to support the hospital infrastructure. These duties help create a safe and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

At NYC Health + Hospitals, the mission is to provide patient-centered care grounded in ICARE values — Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. Every employee is encouraged to engage in empathic communication and collaborative partnerships to enhance the overall health care experience. This position offers employees an opportunity to join a respected public health institution dedicated to making a difference in the lives of NYC residents. In addition to meaningful work, staff benefit from competitive health coverage, retirement plans, paid holidays, vacation days, loan forgiveness programs, tuition discounts, union benefits, and commuter programs, making it a compelling career choice.
