Job Description

SAM is a dynamic and rapidly expanding global sensory and consumer research consultancy dedicated to amplifying the voice of consumers in the creation of high-quality and memorable experiences. Specializing in food, beverage, pet, and health & beauty products, SAM partners with its clients to innovate, improve, and protect their product offerings throughout the development cycle. The consultancy’s expertise includes new product ideation, reinvigorating existing products, assessing product-concept fit and packaging effectiveness, understanding competitive landscapes, and safeguarding product quality from inception to end of shelf life. Within SAM, The National Food Lab division is responsible for delivering these sensory science services to clients across the United States. Based in Minneapolis, MN, this division operates the sensory science program at the company’s USA headquarters.

The role at SAM The National Food Lab is centered on participating in a trained sensory evaluation program. Unlike typical consumer taste tests, this program enlists trained tasters who are skilled in identifying specific flavors, textures, and other sensory attributes of products, comparing how they differ or align with one another. These evaluations assist major food manufacturers in refining and innovating their product lines. Selected candidates will receive comprehensive training to develop their sensory acuity, learning to describe and quantify the intensity of flavor and texture characteristics. Training takes place on three mornings per week, typically between 10:00 am and 12:30 pm, and lasts approximately three months starting June 2025. This training is intensive and requires a strong commitment, as the role expects long-term participation.

After training, panel participation involves conducting taste tests usually lasting about two hours on weekdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The schedule for panels varies depending on project workload, ranging from no sessions some weeks to up to 20 hours of testing during busy periods. The position is part-time and on-call, and therefore not suitable for those seeking consistent full-time hours. However, availability for at least a two-hour window daily within the stated time frame is required.

Compensation includes $15.00 per hour during the training period and $16.00 per hour once training is successfully completed. Participants highlight the enjoyment of becoming trained sensory tasters and the opportunity to connect with a community of like-minded individuals. This role offers a unique chance to engage closely with product development in the food industry while developing specialized sensory evaluation skills in a supportive and professional environment. SAM The National Food Lab values inclusivity and accommodates individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions effectively, reflecting its commitment to equal employment opportunity.
