As a trusted ally for those managing care, Genworth provides tailored products, services, and guidance designed to meet families where they are during critical life moments. With millions of policyholders served daily, Genworth understands the importance of empathy and experience, both of which are brought to the workplace by employees who are often spouses, children, siblings, friends, and neighbors of those needing care. This close connection to their customers' realities underscores the company’s dedication to truly making a difference in the aging and care landscape.
At Genworth, there is a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering an environment where employees are encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work. The company values the broad spectrum of perspectives, characteristics, and experiences necessary to fuel innovation and success. Alongside its internal culture, Genworth invests in local communities through foundation grants, event sponsorships, and volunteerism with an aim to enhance social vitality and well-being.
The company’s guiding values reflect its mission: Make it human by caring about customers, colleagues, and communities; Make it about others by putting customers first and collaborating effectively; Make it happen by working intentionally toward common goals; and Make it better through continuous learning and purposeful careers.
The Senior Software Engineer, Java role at Genworth is a pivotal position supporting top strategic priorities by managing and enhancing the QUEST quoting application—a Java-based system designed for Long Term Care insurance products. This role is hybrid with required in-office presence three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) for candidates residing within 50 miles of the Richmond or Lynchburg, VA offices.
In this role, the engineer will dedicate 15-25% of their time as an Intent Manager, coordinating the QUEST Kanban team’s workload with other SCRUM teams to prioritize and sequence deliverables effectively. The bulk of the time involves collaborating with multiple SCRUM teams to analyze business requirements and deliver enhancements, performance improvements, and new integrations for the QUEST application. The Senior Software Engineer will deepen their knowledge of Long Term Care insurance products and business practices while working extensively with Java, Oracle, JBoss, Apache Web Server, Spring Framework, JSON, APIs, and Eclipse.
This opportunity offers the chance to modernize a core insurance quoting platform while working across technologies and business areas, providing significant impact within a company that values purpose-driven work. Establishing effective communication and stakeholder management skills will be essential, alongside the technical expertise to analyze complex systems and identify changes with a view to minimizing risk. This role requires strong adherence to software development lifecycle processes, change control procedures, and active participation in Agile ceremonies to ensure continuous improvement and quality delivery.
Genworth provides a competitive salary range for this role, from $96,700 to $145,000 annually, with compensation varying based on location, experience, and skill set. The position includes eligibility for a bonus incentive plan that rewards individual and team performance, further emphasizing the company’s culture of achievement and growth. Candidates should note visa sponsorship is not offered for this position. Overall, the Senior Software Engineer, Java at Genworth offers a meaningful career path within an insurance company known for its compassionate approach to customer care and employee satisfaction.
