The role of Senior Recreation Coordinator is essential within the Community Services Department, serving as a key leader in planning, organizing, and overseeing a variety of recreational programs and facilities. The successful candidate will supervise recreational offerings for diverse groups, including tiny tots, youth, teens, adults, and seniors, and will manage specialized activities such as aquatics, skateboarding, sports, arts and crafts, special interest classes, day camps, and special events. This position requires a nuanced understanding of community recreation and cultural needs, combined with solid program administration skills involving budgeting, purchasing, and personnel oversight. Additionally, the Senior Recreation Coordinator provides administrative support to the department, fosters partnerships with public and private entities, and ensures compliance with all applicable State, County, and City regulations. Importantly, this role demands excellent communication skills, the ability to supervise staff and volunteers effectively, and competence in handling medical emergencies with certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED. The position is 100% in-person at Malibu City Hall and requires working flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, supporting the City's mission to deliver accessible and high-quality recreational services year-round. The Senior Recreation Coordinator will also lead public outreach through program publicity, including newsletters, brochures, social media, and the City’s website, ensuring the community remains engaged and informed about recreational opportunities. Job Requirements

  • Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts
  • Ability to handle medical emergencies in a calm and effective manner
  • Skill in planning, supervising, coordinating, reviewing and evaluating a recreation program
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English in person, over the telephone and in writing
  • Ability to use computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, recreation software, and database applications
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, volunteers and the public
  • Must be able to perform physical activities associated with recreation program operations
  • Must successfully complete a probationary period of not less than six months
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must pass all required background and reference checks
  • Must adhere to all City of Malibu policies and procedures

Job Qualifications

  • Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college with major coursework in recreation, child development, sports exercise, public administration, or related field
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in coordinating comprehensive recreational programs, including one year of supervisory or lead experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record
  • Must possess and maintain a valid American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
  • Highly desirable to possess a valid Food Handler Certification, to be maintained throughout employment

Job Duties

  • Oversees the facilities and activities at senior services, swimming pool, or other recreation service provision sites
  • Ensures that programs and facilities are in compliance with applicable State, County and City regulations
  • Performs a variety of general administrative duties such as answering phones, customer service, compiling program statistics, preparing simple reports, composing letters, memoranda, and fliers, data entry, filing and copying, and monitoring expenses and program fees
  • Prepares and executes program publicity, including newsletters, brochures, press releases, fliers, pamphlets, social media and City website
  • Plans, staffs, supervises, and implements assigned special events, including set-up and take down of furniture for classes and lectures
  • Coordinates first aid, CPR and other safety training for Recreation and other City staff, provides training to the public as assigned
  • Handles medical emergencies and injuries, provides first aid and/or adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation, contacts police, fire and emergency medical services as required
