The Senior Park Maintenance Worker role is a critical leadership position within the Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for overseeing and performing a wide range of maintenance activities across the city’s parks and public facilities. This position requires a highly skilled individual capable of leading park maintenance crews and managing day-to-day operations related to the care of lighting and landscape districts, athletic fields, playgrounds, and recreational areas. The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of park maintenance practices and the ability to plan, assign, and evaluate work performed by subordinate staff. Acting as a lead, the Senior Park Maintenance Worker assists the Parks and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor and steps into supervisory roles as needed.

The role encompasses a variety of specialized duties including supervising the maintenance, repair, and inspection efforts, ensuring compliance with city ordinances and safety standards, and managing equipment and resource allocation. Responsibilities include turf care, irrigation system maintenance, tree trimming and planting, pest control, and responding to public inquiries and emergencies. This position also requires performing general custodial and facility maintenance tasks such as painting, plumbing, and carpentry to ensure park amenities are safe, clean, and functional. The incumbent will actively engage in coordinating with community organizations, local agencies, and city management to promote effective park usage and community collaboration.

This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary range of $57,136.13 to $69,449.32 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum three years of park maintenance experience
  • Two years at journey level similar to Park Maintenance Worker II
  • Valid Class C California driver’s license or ability to obtain
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicator, pool operator, and playground inspection certificates within one year
  • Ability to pass fingerprint check and pre-employment physical including drug screening
  • Eligibility to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum three years of responsible park maintenance experience
  • At least two years at a journey level similar to Park Maintenance Worker II
  • Specialized training in park and horticulture maintenance
  • Ability to lead and train maintenance crews
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance equipment and operational safety
  • Effective communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to perform routine facilities maintenance
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license or ability to obtain
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicator, certified pool operator and playground inspection certificates within one year

Job Duties

  • Lead, review, assign, and perform maintenance and repair work in parks and public facilities
  • Participate or direct litter control and crew assignments
  • Inspect and review work methods, performance, and quality of work
  • Train and provide input on employee evaluations and minor disciplinary actions
  • Recommend and report service levels and prepare reports for the supervisor
  • Assign and participate in turf, irrigation, fence, and play area maintenance
  • Operate and maintain vehicles and power-driven equipment such as tractors, mowers, and blowers
  • Oversee planting, trimming, laying sod, and removal of trees and shrubs
  • Maintain and inspect park facilities, pick up trash, remove graffiti and repair vandalism
  • Perform routine custodial and facility maintenance including painting, plumbing, and carpentry
  • Inspect parks for safety, turf, irrigation, and tree problems
  • Order supplies and equipment
  • Assist other public works divisions and respond to public concerns and emergency calls
  • Enforce city ordinances related to park use
  • Serve as acting supervisor when required
  • Establish positive relationships with community organizations and agencies
