The Senior Network Engineer position for the CONUS region plays a pivotal role in supporting the Department of Defense's (DoD) medical mission by addressing highly complex technical requirements related to network infrastructure. This role serves as the premier Network Specialist on this contract and acts as a subject matter expert across all network-related operations. The Senior Network Engineer is accountable for identifying and resolving larger, more complex LAN/WLAN/WAN network problems, researching network-level issues with advanced management tools, and managing the installation, configuration, documentation, and troubleshooting of LAN/WLAN/WAN communication equipment across all Defense Health Agency (DHA) networked facilities.

A significant responsibility of this role includes serving as the regional, and sometimes global, point of contact for network issues, configuration management, communication interconnection, addressing, and multi-protocol routing and network management. The engineer works closely with government officials, medical professionals, and specialized technical personnel to ensure the network infrastructure robustly supports the Military Health System (MHS) mission, maintaining optimal performance and security.

The Senior Network Engineer must demonstrate mastery in a wide variety of networking protocols and technologies such as TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, SMTP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, RSTP, VRRP, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, PPP, and numerous IEEE standards including 802.1d, 802.1q, 802.11, and others. Hands-on experience with various network mediums—Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, ATM—and communication tools like Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), cable testers, and network sniffers is essential.

Moreover, the engineer is charged with increasing LAN/WLAN/WAN security by managing firewalls, VPN devices, and intrusion detection systems to safeguard sensitive military medical systems from unauthorized access. This role requires a deep understanding of the overall network across various operating systems including Microsoft OS, Windows Active Directory, UNIX, and OpenVMS, encompassing both local and wide-area networks.

In addition to technical expertise, the Senior Network Engineer provides consultative advice to government staff and contractors, leads network specialists, and documents network changes and enhancements to ensure compliance with DoD and DHA standards. They continuously evaluate network performance using tools like Orion SolarWinds, ARMIS, and Ansible while contributing to policy development to enforce best practices.
