Job Description

Lockheed Martin Space is a pioneering leader in the aerospace and defense industry, dedicated to advancing space technology and innovation. With a mission to harness the full potential of space, Lockheed Martin Space focuses on creating future-ready solutions that emphasize resiliency, security, and global connectivity. The company is committed to pushing technological boundaries, cultivating partnerships across industries and countries, and fueling the next generation of spacecraft and skilled workforce. As part of their 21st Century Security vision, they aim to innovate and inspire while reducing costs and erasing traditional boundaries in the space domain.

Lockheed Martin's Space Metrology Operations is an integral part of this vision, providing a critical backbone for ensuring that all measurement and test equipment (M&TE) is calibrated and certified to the highest standards, thereby supporting mission-critical production milestones. The Senior Metrologist role is a leadership position within this operations team, based in Huntsville, Alabama, with responsibilities extending to the Courtland site. This full-time, onsite position involves a pioneering role in maintaining and advancing metrology processes that uphold rigorous quality and precision standards necessary for aerospace innovation.

As the Team Lead for the Metrology Operations department, the Senior Metrologist is responsible for managing and mentoring calibration technicians, guiding calibration assignments, and developing scientifically rigorous calibration methods and procedures. The position demands expertise in calibration across various disciplines including electronic, dimensional, and torque measurement, with adherence to ISO/IEC 17025 compliant quality management systems. A significant portion of the duties involves performing and overseeing calibrations on-site at customer locations, requiring weekly travel between Huntsville and Courtland campuses, facilitated by a company vehicle.

Lockheed Martin places great importance on quality assurance in calibration activities, which the Senior Metrologist helps ensure through thorough quality checks and documentation review of calibration efforts done internally and by external vendors. The role also includes interaction with local customers to align metrology operations with program objectives and broader organizational goals. This position demands a high level of technical skill, leadership, and communication capabilities, along with the ability to conduct statistical analyses for risk assessment and reliability evaluation in measurement uncertainties.

Beyond technical responsibilities, the role offers opportunities for career development, mentorship, and engagement in a collaborative, high-performing team environment. Lockheed Martin is known for its robust benefits package, supporting work-life balance and rewarding employee contributions. Candidates for this role must be U.S. citizens eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret clearance, reflecting the sensitive nature of the aerospace and defense projects undertaken by Lockheed Martin.

Joining Lockheed Martin Space as a Senior Metrologist means becoming part of a global team dedicated to confronting some of the most challenging and impactful missions in space technology. This role is an excellent opportunity for experienced metrology professionals who seek to lead in quality assurance and calibration operations in a dynamic, mission-driven environment where precision and innovation are paramount.
