This culture encourages employees to contribute meaningfully to an incredible mission: making travel accessible and joyful for people everywhere. Expedia Group’s flagship brands include Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, and collectively the organization plays an instrumental role in shaping the future of travel globally.
The Senior Manager, Software Development Engineering role within Expedia Group is a pivotal leadership position based in Austin, Texas. The selected candidate will join the Lodging Booking Platform Technology team, a key division within the Book-to-Trip Technology Division that drives the core of Expedia’s Lodging Reservations. This team oversees the comprehensive booking platform responsible for lodging reservations across all Expedia Group points of sale and subsidiaries. Operating on a microservices architecture hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the platform is the backbone of a business unit generating over 60% of Expedia's total revenue, making this a high-impact role ensuring mission-critical systems are scalable, resilient, and extensible.
In this capacity, the Senior Manager will lead multiple engineering teams focused on evolving and building next-generation booking services that meet stringent reliability, scalability, and performance standards across global markets. The role demands hands-on technical leadership combined with strategic oversight, including defining a clear technical vision and roadmap that aligns with broader product and architectural goals. Responsibilities also include setting and enforcing rigorous engineering best practices covering design, coding standards, testing, observability, security, and operational readiness. The incumbent partners closely with product managers, architects, and other platform teams to facilitate cross-domain initiatives, promoting service reuse and operational fungibility.
This leadership position is essential for nurturing a diverse, high-performing engineering organization through coaching, mentorship, and effective hiring practices. The Senior Manager will champion a culture rooted in innovation, accountability, and psychological safety, empowering teams to deliver with excellence. Additionally, the role integrates modern AI and machine learning capabilities to enhance platform outcomes safely and responsibly, requiring familiarity with AI-driven systems, workflows, and relevant real-world applications.
Successful candidates will bring deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud-native technologies, high-volume transactional environments, and modern programming languages. The role entails ownership of end-to-end delivery and operations of complex, distributed platforms, encompassing system design, API and data modeling, and operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, and incident response. The compensation range for this role in Austin is $184,500 to $258,000 annually, with potential to reach $295,000 based on sustained high performance. Expedia Group also offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, wellness programs, travel discounts, and access to the International Airlines Travel Agent Network (IATAN). The company is firmly committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, offering accommodation requests for applicants with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunity employment regardless of protected characteristics. Join Expedia Group and be part of a company dedicated to building the future of travel worldwide, empowering travelers to book and experience journeys with confidence and joy.
