Job Description
The National Geographic Society is a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring people to care about the planet. With a rich history spanning over a century, the Society leverages the power of science, technology, education, exploration, and storytelling to drive global impact and foster greater understanding of the world. As a leader in the nonprofit sector, National Geographic collaborates with various partners including foundations, government agencies, corporations, and individuals to fund and support its diverse mission-driven programs. Its Advancement team is essential in cultivating philanthropic partnerships and producing transformative events that deepen engagement and generate broad public support for the Society's initiatives.
The Senior Manager, Signature Events, within the National Geographic Society's Global Special Events team, plays a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the Society's signature events portfolio. This position involves comprehensive program management and production responsibilities, including overseeing multi-day, multi-venue hybrid summits such as the Storytellers Summit and the Explorers Festival. The role demands close collaboration with agency partners and internal stakeholders to ensure each event encapsulates the Society’s mission, connecting Explorers, donors, staff, and partners in meaningful ways that reinforce philanthropic support.
Beyond event logistics and execution, the Senior Manager is tasked with facilitating cross-functional collaboration to guarantee a seamless, high-quality experience marked by measurable impact. This includes managing budgets, contract negotiations, vendor relations, and volunteer programs, while aligning event delivery with brand standards and organizational priorities. Additionally, the role requires strong communication and relationship-building skills to foster trust and cooperation across departments and with external partners. The position offers opportunities to contribute to high-profile events that elevate visibility for the Society's executives, programs, sponsors, and Explorers globally.
Candidates for this role should expect to engage in intensive planning, coordination, and on-site management that may include evening and weekend commitments, as well as domestic and international travel for event execution. The salary range for this position is between $104,500 and $110,000, reflecting the complexity and high level of responsibility inherent in managing significant, influential events that directly support the organization’s philanthropic and programmatic goals. The National Geographic Society also offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package, which highlights its commitment to employee well-being and professional growth, further solidifying this role as a unique opportunity for event management professionals passionate about making a meaningful difference through mission-driven work.
